Hello All

Would anyone be interested in my Solidworks CAD files for the cannon I made? It is heavily inspired from Jerry Howell's Naval cannon but is in no way a rip off of his work (I dont have his plans - just looked at his website).

Usage would be free, not for profit, and with proper acknowledgment.

I have attached an image of the assembly. I also have a you tube video of me firing it without carriage for the first time if you would like to see it.

Sure go ahead and post away....but be sure to include an orthographic drawing with dimensions, then its just not a pretty face, but something we can make also.

Here are the PDF's of the barrel, trunnions, and cut list for the carriage. The PDF's are on A3 paper and the units are mm.

Many thanks for posting.

I LIKE your dimensioning style - very readable!

Some of us have 2d, some 3d capabilities and software in AutoCAD and a few have SolidWORKS. (So having all 3 formats is functional for someone here.)

I can't open you pdf files, the want to default to indix.php and won't open. Can you convert them to jpg or gif so the more simple minded among us---me, can see them.

Hello

I have attached the barrel drawing as both DXF and jpg.

The dimensioning scheme I used was to make it easy for me to turn on the lathe with the DRO zeroed at one end.

My barrel was made from a solid 2in 4140 steel pin. If anyone is wondering why I have the vent hole on an angle it is because I wanted the vent in the "scale" location but my long series drill was not long enough to reach

I can't open your pdf files, they want to default to index.php and won't open.

I had that problem too but solved it by saving the file on my computer and opening it with Adobe myself instead of asking the browser to do it.

You might also want to change the extension from .php to .pdf.

For some reason it wanted to open as a .php and not a .pdf. I did get them open later using the techniques George describe. Not very user friendly, but I think that is a function the GBO software and not the PDF that Tarquin submitted.

The drawings appear to be done in french units of measure....millimeters.

for those who are having problems opening these files here is how to see them.

Double click on the link. If a window pops up asking if you want to open a file called index.php click on save file, then click ok.

Another window will open and ask you the name you want to save to. Under file name should be the default name Index. Change this name to Index01.pdf. under the save as type hit the drop down arrow and change it to All files and click save.

Do the same for the other two files except save as index02.pdf and index03.pdf.

I usually save the type files to my desktop the first time I look at them and the move them later to another folder.

Now you should be able to open the file just by clicking on them, if you have adobe reader installed on you computer.

If you don't have adobe reader installed, you can do so for free.

This will get you to the download site - it will, when it opens, determine what operating system you have and give you instructions on how to load it.

If you keep it updated, then Windows will automatically use it to open the pdf files.

French? Was it not Ben Franklin that proposed that the metric system be the WORLD-WIDE system of measurement.

Are there not ONLY TWO nations in the world still stuck on (non) standard inch system of measurement?

(That's why I commonly use dual dimensioning.)

Do the cap square bolts run vertically through the side cheeks and exit on the bottom side? The front ones should also go through the axle.

They could run all the way down but they dont. At this stage I only fire it with paper towel wadding to make some smoke and noise. If I was to start firing projectiles I would probably need to secure the caps more.

For the people who are happier with the imperial system.
I have created a PDF with imperial dimensions instead. It only took a minute as I just changed the document unit properties and the computer did the rest.

I dunno. I reckon a cannon 25.4 times my scale would be pretty impressive to see in action.

it would only be about 16,387 times more massive (25^3) I think.

It was absolutely no problem at all to reprint.

Apparently this is a bug in Firefox 8.0. If you have the problem go to http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/questions/895127 and read about it.

For now save the file and rename it to see it.

What type of cartridge would you use?
In your video, how much powder did you use and what type?
I am very excited and plan to build a few cannons and mortars in the very near future.

Hello Mennelabs

I started with the chart that is in the safe loads and construction sticky thread. It works out to 80 grains (off the top of my head). I also talked with the cannon owner at my local hunting shop. I use Triple 7 powder. The powder is a bit more coarse than table salt, i think it is FF but I would have to check when I get home.

Please not that at this stage I just fire dry paper towel as wadding. I have never fired any projectile with this design and if I were to do so I would reduce the powder load and work up from there.
