I've read many of the comments on this site and Ballistol has been mentioned.  What is it?  What are it advantages?

Great stuff--that's what it is.  It, denatured alcohol and water are all I use to care for my guns.  It is supposed to be good for the wood also.  I lube patches with Ballistol/water mix.  If you can stand the smell you'll love it.

Here's some detailed info on Ballistol. Because it's water-soluble multi-purpose properties, I recommend it for patch lube and bore swabbing at the range. My first choice is Lehigh Valley Lube -- my 2nd is Ballistol. Some shooters use Ballistol or Lehigh as patch lube wet... some wetten their patches -- then place them on a window/door screen outdoors to dry first.
