VIZSLA WITH A SWOLLEN TOE
« on: January 03, 2004, 06:17:14 AM »
Hey guys...Jake's (2yr. old Vizsla) got a swollen toe.  He's carrying his left rear leg...but when excited, he seems to forget about it.

NO evidence of a wound...and I thoroughly checked to make sure a sticker or somthining else hasn't worked it's way up in there.  Jake's a real jumper...when it comes to retrieiving balls or frisbie's in the yard.  I suspect he might have stepped in a hole or twisted the toe on a "landing".

Ideas?   :?

Thanks guys!   ...Chris

Swollen toe

Chris:  I have a 10.5 yr old Standard Poodle who does the same thing.  He won't jump for frisbees, and he's too smart to go chasing a ball (threw it three times for him when he was younger - he ran after it the first two times and then said - hay, if you want the dang thing go get it yourself.  His older brother trained him too well) but he often jumps off the front porch or the steps or something and may wind up with a sore this or that for a couple of days but then he is fine.  He had injured his toes a couple of times and has had swollen feet that cause him to lift them and pretend he has only 3 legs - that happens a lot during the winter when he gets snow packed into his paw - but it goes away in a day or so and then he is out trying to outjump his older brother (who is too smart to try jumping at his age).  But, I agree with freddogs, if it doesn't get better within a couple of days, go see the Vet.  HTH.  Mikey.

Chris,
I would bet the Dog has an infected Nail Bed. Get it to the Vet and have them check it out NOW. I fooled around with a GSHP that had a swollen toe and it ended up costing me over $800.00 to get it Un infected. The Vizsla shows the same symtoms as my Shorthair did. The Vet said another week and the Toe would have gone Gangrenous and amputation would have been the only recourse to save the Dogs life. I hope it works out for you.

Inspector...you SCARED ME HALF TO DEATH!!!

Took Jake in...BROKEN TOE.  I suspected a sprain or break...but a nail bed infection???  Either way it's not good...but at least it's a "clean break".  He should be good as new in a few weeks.

Now all I've got to do is to get him to quit running and jumping...yea, right.  Did you ever try to keep a Vizsla down...it ain't easy.

Thanks for the help guys!  ...Chris    :D
