30-30AI question
« on: January 26, 2004, 02:07:38 PM »
Been having trouble finding 30-30AI information.  What are the advantages of this cartridge?  Anyone shooting this?

I have a 30 Herret and a 30-30 barrel.  Would you be better to go a custom or have one of these barrels rechambered?

It depends.

It really depends on what you want to do.  I have a 30-30AI 24" bull barrel and I love it.  Fireforming is easy unless you use heavier brass.  Advantages over 30-30 include a couple hundred fps faster, longer brass life, and not a run of the mill 30-30.  If you load carefully for the 30 Herrett it is a close runner up.  Again you can use stronger brass and push the envelope a little.  Jim Henry, TC gunsmith, really likes this round and feels it doesn't get enough credit.  The only problem is that frequently the throats are oversize and misaligned.  (not spouting other people's theories, mine had a .310 throat)  Then I would go to AI just for fun.   I have formed, and neck turned 375 winchester brass to mine and it should last a long time.  Dan

to me it would depend on the length of your current barrels.  The Herret has the advantage in 10"er's only.  I wouldn't see any advantage to a 30-30AI in 10" barrel.  If your current 30-30 barrel is 14" and has a suitable throat( rechambering to 30-30AI isn't going to touch the throat ), then I might consider rechambering to the AI, especially if your Herret is 10".  I have both 10" Herret and 14" 30-30AI and wouldn't want to part with either.  Just my $0.02 worth.  GOOD SHOOTIN', Walt   :D

I haven't heard of Jim Henry.(probably haven't heard of quite a few things) but.... I am trying to get ahold of a 14" 30-30 to have it "AI" ed.  I guess that is kind of clear.  AND would like to get ahold of Jim to descuss it with him.  Do you know how to get in touch with him.

Thanks
