Do you think this scope is enough for a 270 or would you go with 3x9x40 or bigger?

It is more about what you are shooting at than what you are shooting with...   Tell us what you are going to be using it for and we can make a better recommendation.

Ive shot deer out to 300 yards with my 280 wearing a 2x7 luepold and dont remember thinking i needed more magnification. I do prefer a 3x9 or 4x12 though when the range gets out past 400 yards. Not that a 7x wont do the job its just a bit eaiser with more magnification.

I've thought of getting one but the specs. say the adjustment is 1/2" and most other scopes say 1/4" I don't know if that matters on larger game or different distances. Don't have one yet because I can't wrap my head around this difference. I passed on a nice one in the Classifieds the other day. Can anyone tell me the pros or cons of this adjustment difference?
I have a 3-9 that I like.

I personally wouldn't go bigger than 3-9 unless it's a bench/sniper gun more than a hunting gun.

Lately I have been swapping between 2 scopes A Burris 4.5-14x32 (burris replacement for their short mag series) and a Bushnell 2-7x32 . depending on type of terrain, (Typical new England Mixed hardwood and firs , with an occasional High open field,  or farmstead .

The 2-7 magnification has been a non-issue for the varrying terrain I hunt.  I have found myself using the 4.5-14x32 a bit more but it's less about needing more magnification and more about personal preference. I usually keep it set at 4.5 in woods and only occasionally need to bump it up just a tad when I approach an open area.

I have also been satisfied with the light transmission capabilities of each scope using the smaller objective lens, even as dusk approaches. The smaller objective has been a non-issue,  and I like the fact it mounts low on my rig.

I believe the Burris adjustments for 2-7x35 are 1/4

There's not much to worry about in the difference between 1/2 and 1/4 MOA adjustments.  If you think about it for a minute the farthest you would ever be from your desired perfect aiming point is 1/2" at 100 yards or 1-1/2" at 300 yards.

No big game animal can live on the difference.

With that said, if the OP would let folks know what kind of terrain, vegetation and distances he expects to hunt in it would help to make a recommendation.

For example, I hunt with a 1.5-6 scope on my .308 but 200 yards is a long, long way around here.

My personal observation is that folks tend to carry more scope than they need.  Pretty much everybody you know would be insulted if you argued that they couldn't hit a deer in the desired place at 50 yards.  A 7 power scope offers the same view at 350 yards and the significant majority of the deer shot in the country are shot at 100 yards or less so why would most folks need more scope?
