Technical question

In the AP Style Manual it is correct to put down ".22-caliber" when writing about a 22 caliber rifle.
 
I contend that "22 caliber" is more accurate than ".22-caliber" because you are actually stating that the bullet is 22/100 of 1/100 diameter.
 
My daughter is an editor of a small Midwest newspaper, and the police chief stated that a ".22 caliber rifle" was stolen. I believe that this statement is more accurate than a ".22-caliber" rifle.
 
A little input here would be welcome. I have seen my case stated previously in some publication, and I note that Speer manual always list calibers in their manual as 44-40, 44, and so on. the only decimal points are for the actual diameters of their reloading bullets.

I would imagine you are technically correct. However I do it all the time myself, so I can't join the grammar nazi camp, and with out spell check my ramblings would be indecipherable (actually spelled that one without help   but rambleings not so much, ooh did it again).

its the same with 45 Colt or 45 Long Colt . Back in the day it was a 45 Colt you ever see a 45 Colt short ? There was a 41 Long . Back to op , If the bore of the gun is being stated then the decimal seems correct forget the - , if the cartrage is being stated forget the dec. and - just my opinion for what little its worth !

I may be wrong but I believe it was called the LONG colt because the 45 Schoefield ctg was shorter and less powerful and that was how they designated which ctg they were using. POWDERMAN.

Hmmm.  Seems to me the OPs question isn't really a technical question as stated but a question of semantics.  Just to be technical.     Generally accepted terms are seldom technically correct but are used to convey a general understanding.

It could be a .22LR caliber rifle stolen, or a 22 mag rife stolen.  I wouldn't worry about grammer when posting in the paper.  Like someone said, they are all full auto assault rifles to the mainstream media.  The 45 could also be the 45 acp.  I always thought it was designated as 45 long Colt to seperate it from a 45 acp Colt.

45 Colt and 45 acp seems to be enough . And now the Glock round , would that be the super short 45 ?

they made a 45 that was shorter and a pistol with a thinner grip front to back for it. 45 cal in a 40 S&W size frame .
