Your choices, why?
« on: December 10, 2011, 03:56:55 PM »
I started at tool and have realized that nostalgia has become increasingly important. I'm not really ready to trade the tools in but find them less interesting every season.

You forgot "dependable home and personal defense tool".  Some of the guns I own fit that category, some are nostalgic (like the Ruger Blackhawk and the Buffalo Carbine).

My son and I have gone through many firearms. The ones we now have each have a purpose and suit those purposes well. They are for home defense, personal defense ( Conceal Carry & Duty Carry ), and hunting. We've bought flashy, fancy firearms and got rid of almost every one. Function, reliability and the ability to do what we bought each one for, and do it well, is what's important to us.

The Colt Police Positive is certainly a dependable home defense tool , but I certainly don't think of it as a plain and simple "tool" choice. Now if it was the pistol your grand dad carried on the force or maybe you are intrigued by the prohibition era you have differing reasons for ownership. A Glock or Ruger Security Six would qualify as tools perhaps. The Les Baer 1911 may scratch that mechanical art itch.

None of the above in any case. Mine were all selected because they were well suited for the purpose intended, and most had a well established reputation for quality, performance, and value. E.g., Remington 700

When you've got more guns than God, there's just got to be a lot of reasons and I could only claim one of those listed.

Hello empty quiver:
My reason for the guns I have is not really too difficult too figure out. I think it started when I was a pre-schooler,    There was an old man from the mts. of western NC who was much older than my dad and was a good friend. He had moved to SC some time during the 20's or 30's. His name was Preacher Graham, he had been in the calvary out west when he was young and was a scout. He told of the high grass on the plains and how he killed grizzlies with a 45-70, I think, Said he would whistle and they would stand up and he shot them for the soldiers food. My young heart would race like I was there with him.ha ha, What stories he had to tell. I have told you this as best I remember. He was our friend for years, a wonderful man of God. I think this was where it started and has never stopped.
I love rifles and hand guns, I like SG's fairly well. I am 66 yrs old and my love affair with guns has never stopped, not even for a while.  Did I say, I LOVE GUNS!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i like military guns best.

My dad and an uncle were primarily bird and small game hunters.  They use to tell hunting stories all the time.  This led me to purchasing my first shotgun.

My best friend Richie's uncle, and two of my uncles  were both in the army (one a grunt the other in the US Army Air Force) during WW2, and they use to tell us stories about the war.  I remember the souvenirs (German rifles and helmets) they brought home.  This and my time in the military led me to purchase my first black rifle. I still have the K98, brought back from the war.

I purchased my first single shot a Ruger No1, because, I couldn't put it down after seeing the way the rifle opened and closed to load, and unload.  What a piece of mechanical workmanship.

Other than that, I own guns because I strongly believe in the 2nd Amdt.

"You are entitled to your own opinions, but you are not entitled to your own facts." - Sen. Daniel Patrick Moynihan

When you allow a lie to go unchallenged, it becomes the truth.

My quandary, I personally, don't think I have enough Handi's but, I know I have more Handi's than I really need or should have.

I doubt many will mark the tech geek. But the gun companies have made a fortune over the years coming up with the next hot new thing. And folks line up in drove whether the changes are useful or not.

None of the above.  Almost all of my guns are picked because they are best possible killing instrument available for a specific purpose.  They are never the cheapest, or on sale before the season.  Some have taken years to find (like 26" IC Model 12 98% - quail gun) and some are available in any gun store (like 26" BPS 10ga, camo - goose gun).  Some are heirlooms, some collectors quality, some are military vintage.  All are killers.

No Guns Here:

Now that's really the thinking man's approach to it, and I confess there has always been an aspect of that in my purchases. In fact, I believe it is why I have more guns than I need.

yeah... all my logic went out the window after I got my first .30-'06 and my first 12 gauge.  Inherited a nice .22 bolt gun.  After that there was no logic...  I knew even at that young age that I had pretty much everything covered.  After that it was just whatever attracted me at the time.  Now, ONCE in a while I buy for a NEED.  Example, getting ready to order a shotgun for my son.  He's a small 12yo so I found an 1100 LT 20 with a youth stock and a short barrel.  Of course at the same time I found a nice 1100 LT 20 Special Field that I have always thought was a nice gun.  May just get stupid and get them both.  One for him and one for me...

For many of you I wonder if the guns simply fell out of the sky into your hands, or were gifts. Certainly something made that particular model stand apart from the rest.

A Ruger #1, a Marlin 1895, A Handi Rifle, a Trapdoor Springfield, all chambered in 45-70. Each is very different, but in some respects very similar in that they shoot a cartridge that though very powerful has limited range. They all share the history of that cartridge as well.

The poll choices were as much to illustrate that point, not to limit ones choices so much, but to represent things that may go into ones decision making.

Many seem to have appreciated the rugged, dependability and utility. To me that would come under tool, the " it was for sale part "may have hung some of you up.

For example I own a few SIG handguns, they are tools, very dependable I see mechanical genius in the design but by and large they are tools. Going forward though I won't likely want any more of them, single action revolvers are really starting to appeal to me. Both the historical significance and the beauty are driving this. I also own a Tikka lite rifle, an AR-15, A Beretta Neos,  a Marlin .22 auto, and a Knight KBR ML. They all have polymer stocks, are pretty modern in looks and design. Each is supremely functional. But to be honest, functionality and cost effectiveness is about the only appeal they have to me. I also own an 1895 Marlin, a percussion lock .50 muzzle loader, and a Super Grade Winchester Model 70. Those guns are functional but they are handsome guns, nicely figured wood, classic lines, superbly finished ( well I built the ML so that is debatable ).

So for pure functionality I pretty well have the bases covered. now days I am drawn to guns that are interesting from a historical aspect primarily and beauty as well I suppose. On my Santa list are  Garand, a Blackhawk, a Savage 99, and both a Winchester 88 and 100.

I have some that are pure nostalgia...belonged to family...or personal connection, like the one I brought home from RVN.   Others I acquired because they are the best self-defense arms that I can afford.  Others I just got a good deal on and am keeping for investment.  Some I was given because they were "broke" and I repaired them and haven't found anything to do with them.  A few that don't fit the above categories are just fun to shoot.

My overall reason for having guns is because I like them and can afford them.   ;)

I have old military guns.  I just like having them to show off to people and to talk about.

I have old non military guns just to look at and enjoy having.

I have my long range guns.  latest in Tactical Equipment and precission shooting.

I live to hunt, and I hunt with them all.

A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' Nostalgia, mechanical piece of art has played a role in a few purchases like my Ruger SA revolver and my H&R single shot rifles and shotguns.

Other  purchases were simply need specific tools.  For instance, My Kel-Tec P11 fit the need for a compact CCW with respectable fire power.  My S&W M&P .40fs filled the need for a full sized hi-cap. service pistol for home defense or when I feel that I may be under gunned with the P11.
