45 conicals

I amm trying to find a lead bore sized conical load that will shoot well from my 209x45.I`ve been told to try a wad between the powder and bullet. Is this a good idea?I`ve heard of chamber ringing caused by wads in black powder cart. rifles. Is this a concern for muzzleloaders?

This sounds like a job for the great Underclocked, known to his legions of fans as "the Conical Guy". Underclocked is enamored of the conical, and has a few Encore .45's as well.

Though not considered a "conical" by most, the Powerbelt is-- and my .45 Encore shot the 275 gr. Powerbelt as well as anything.

Have you determined your land to land dimensions?  That is needed to select a good conical.  Also, does your barrel seem totally uniform as you run a tight patch down the bore?  If not, conicals might be out of the picture.

You could try some White PowerPunch 380 grain bullets, some NoExcuses 385 grainers, or maybe some of Mose's gas checked boolets (if he has any available).  PRBullets makes several weights for the .45, I would stick to the lower end of the weight range for that Encore ---but you never know until you try them.  And then there are the roll-your-owns.

You probably won't need an overpowder wad or buffer unless shooting very heavy loads (OUCH!) or using FFFg T7.  If a bullet doesn't perform well in the rifle, you then might try it with a Wonder Wad or similar or even about 20 volumetric grains of fine yellow cornmeal over the powder charge.

But you need to know your land to land and whether the bullets you are contemplating will load without a sledge hammer.  If it is .451 (or within about .0005 of that), the NE and PP and Mose should all be a good fit.
WHUT?
