The older I get ....
« on: December 13, 2011, 05:26:59 AM »
Two things occurred to me lately first , I stood up from a chair the other day and my body on autopilot vocalized a very low grunting noise (lower back pain)....... and went Ahhh so that's why my dad always made that noise so much in later years. (I have become my father).

It also occurred to me the older I have gotten the more of a minimalist I have become with regards to materialistic stuff. This shift didn't occur all at once ,It was rather so subtle I hardly noticed. I had collected alot of stuff in my early years and somewhere along the line I unconsiously just started shedding it all.

I must tell you I feel so much better (aside from the lower back pain as of late :)  ) with less materialistic possessions in my life.  Now I think I have entered a phase of my life where an item must have a practical purpose for me to purchase it.

Have others experienced this minimalist shift as well in their lives the more they have aged ?

Yep. For me the triggering event is knowing that my last kid leaves for college next fall. I have given things away. Have a list of things to sell. And even a list of things to burn. There's a list of repairs to make on the house that I didn't dare do while kids were still living at home, and most of those repairs will be done by me.

I thought that was called moving. ;D  I think the shedding is much the realization that those things in the end were not as appropriate or useful as I thought they would be. They were perfectly good and I had no reason to part with them though. After ten years sitting in a corner you just say "self your not gonna fall in love with that". At that point I finally pass those things along, sometimes they are sold but usually I give them to a younger hunter who is short on gear. Other items go to the Epilepsy Foundation for their store.

Turmeric! Dr. Manny on Fox News, Health section, says Turmeric is at least as good an antiinflamatory as Ibuprofen, it rebuilds the synapses in the brain, and has anti cancer properties too.
I take about a half teaspoon a day and don't have joint pain now.
Hope this helps.

I find the op to hit the nail on the head. I look back and wonder why I loaded myself down with junk. The worry about it getting stolen and keeping up with it. If I don't need it I don't buy anymore .
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

Same here!  In earlier times I thought I had to have everything.  Nowadays I don't seem to be able to get rid of things.  In my case at least, my values changed over the years to the point I now realize what is actually important and it ain't material things.   ;)

I guess I haven't reached the age yet where I don't appreciate having lots of toys and using them keeps me from getting creaky.

For three months I have been in homes with no stairs.  My Buddy in Ft Lauderdale, My Friend in Tampa, and My Parents Home in Tennessee.  Got home last night.  Fell down the stairs this morning.  Knee just gave way, down I went.  Sat down and bounced on every step till I hit the floor in the Hallway.  (Gosh that's the third or fourth time I've done that).  Guess I need to start looking for a one story house, or move to the downstairs bedroom.

Wife says the day I quite using the stairs is the day I'll lose the ability to use the stairs.  I asked "What if I should break my neck"?  She laughs, says, "You keep landing on the padded side, your neck is at the other end.  Plus I keep the insurance paid up".  Sounds a bit fishey to me.

As for getting rid of stuff, yea I sent a bunch of guns to my oldest back in October  Thinking of have a yard sale in the spring.  Don't use the stuff, don't need it.

That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

SpritHawk:  My buddy had a hip replacement.  He could not get up out of a chair.  the guys at his shop came over and took his recliner.  They added a 2X4 frame to the bottom of his chair.  that raised his recliner by 3 1/2 inches.  Made it a lot easier to get in and out fo the recliner.  I tried it and liked it.  I'm going to do it to my recliner.  The guys in his shop also took the sofa in the waiting room and changed the legs out under the sofa.  Instead of being two inches they are now six inches.  it sure is a lot easier to sit down and get up off that sofa.  Think about it, things we can do to ease aging.
