Small game hunting and fly fishing in your area?
« on: December 20, 2011, 04:12:07 AM »
It seems that after deer season I have the woods all to myself. Not much interest around here in small game hunting, though the squirrel hunting can be excellent and the rabbit hunting can be good if you take the time to find them. Grouse get a lot of interest in some parts, but most of the grouse cover is unhunted for the most part. Generally, small game hunting is not very popular here.

Likewise with fly fishing. Lots of fishermen here, but in over 20 years I think I've seen about five fly fishermen if I exclude the popular fly fishing creeks of the southeast part of the state. It seems like a lot of people try it.

In both of these pursuits it seems like a lot of people try it, then quit.

What's it like in your area for these two things?

Before moving to town a couple months ago I had the woods to myself almost all year.
Occassionally one of the city nieghbors would come down and "try" to get a deer.
We had many a good times out hunting the lil' squirrels, had a couple dogs who pointed them out to us.

I haven't been able to spend as much time out in the colder months for a while.
But the rest of the year it was wide open to me, spent quite a few days just sitting out there.

Depends on what you call "small game".  Waterfowl and pheasants are big here in the Kansas, particularly pheasants.  If you run into a squirrel hunter he's most likely not of european descent...

Before I took up bowhunting I did some small game in the early fall, between doves and ducks/deer.  Now I'm chasing big game with a bow...  Seems bow hunting is getting more popular all the time and small game less... Make sense to me.  After a great day of squirrel hunting I have a few rodents I don't want to eat and I've had a nice walk/sit.  After a great day of bowhunting I have a high that takes a while to come down from...  No number of squirrels can equal that rush of a big buck walking under your stand.

:) What you say is quite true...most of the states I hunt, big game is the main thrust...few people hunt small game, even fall turkey...that is fine with me, I enjoy it...I have been out everyday for the the last week, and say one other hunter...it was a young guy calling coyotes...here the big game seasons are over..fortunately they don't let bow hunting go on forever...as for fly fishing, naturally little going on now due to ice...but it IS the thing to do, especially with the upward mobile yuppie crowd...most of my fly fishing these days is on small streams for native trout or brookies for the pan...

Pretty much the only squirrel hunter when I am out and I like it that way. Last time I ran across some fellow bushytail hunters they were vietnamese. Couple young guys and an old timer. Hell of a nice guy he took more than the other three combined and hunted alone (as is also my usual preference). There are bow hunters a foot though too. Sure it bugs em when I am slipping through their shooting lane :).

I don't see that many small game hunters around here. I'm on vacation next week so I plan on getting out in the woods with my 16 gauge for some partridge, rabbits and squirrels. Hopefully it will cure the post deer season let down.

We do have a few fly fishermen around here. I haven't gotten into that yet. Ice fishing is very popular where I live.

I thoroughly enjoy Pheasant and Rabbit hunting...once the big gamers are done, PIECE of CAKE. I have the fields all to myself and the hunting is great.  8)

Where I am at now, Kent County Michigan, there isn't a whole lot of activity after the first week of firearm deer season which opens Nov 15th.  When I lived in the Upper Peninsula, hunting bunnies with beagles was popular until the wolves moved in and started picking off dogs.  I pretty much have the woods to myself if I want after the 1st of December except for a few trappers here and there.  Coyotes are becoming more popular in the winter but it seems like there are fewer and fewer die hards that will hang out in the cold weather.
