454 Super Redhawk Question
« on: December 23, 2002, 03:04:12 PM »
Got a question on my new 454 - I took her out this weekend and shot factory loaded Corbon 454's.  With each of the loads (240 gr. JHP at 1450 - 44 mag. equivalent & 265 gr. at 1800 - full power) the fired cases got stuck in all six chambers.  They had to be tapped out with a pen & staple gun.  The primers looked OK - no signs of excess pressure.  Also shot some Buffalo Bore 45 LC's afterwards - they extracted fine.  The Corbon's are loaded with starline brass.  Has anyone else experienced this?  Other than the extraction problem, the gun shoots great.  I'm thinking of trying the Winchester partition golds next.

Thanks, Duval

Duval,
I did some checking with a buddy of mine that has the same gun. He has experienced no such problems.  I am not sure what would cause it except maybe some oil or solvent was left in the chambers when you shot and that stuff managed to increase the friction in the chambers.  I would make sure the chambers were clean and dry and try maybe one bullet at a time in each chamber.  See if it still does it.  If it does I would be on the phone to Corbon and Ruger and see what they think .

I had the same problem with Magtech 260gr when I got my SRH. When I contacted Ruger, the first question they asked was were you using Hornady ammo. So it seems there are some "trouble" ammos out there. All Winchester loads, and most handloads I have tried have funtioned flawlessly.  The only problem handloads I had were using Hornady 250gr which I found out were for .45colt velocities only. Switched to Hornady 240 or Speer 260mag and no more problems. All my handloads have been in Starline brass, high quality stuff, I  doubt that is the problem. If all else fails, as has been suggested get on the horn with Corbon.

Thanks for the responses.  I'll be able to try it again in a couple weeks - this time I'll try Winchesters.  If they extract fine, then I'll contact Corbon.  If they don't, then I'll get on the horn with Ruger.
