Elk with a WFN-GC
« on: December 05, 2011, 12:33:33 PM »
Just returned from Montana where I got my first elk using a Freedom Arms 500 Wyoming Express loaded with the LBT 435 WFN-GC at 1140 fps. Hit the elk behind the shoulder at 88 yards and it slowly walked about 40 yards and down it went. Recovered the bullet in the dirt behind where the elk was standing and it looked new other than the rifling. Thanks Veral!

Here's the recovered bullet next to a loaded round.

Nice going!

I've had the hots for a FA M83 in .500 WE ever since the cartridge was introduced. Cool to see one in action... 8)
(If you ever get bored with it and wanna sell it at a "fixed income" price... ;)  )

NICE! What area where you hunting in?

That's quite some handgun round. Just for grins, can you post a picture of a .500 WE cartridge next to a .44 Mag?
..

There is a saying about 'carry a big stick' which seems to apply here, methinks!  Kudo's to you!

I've never even held a 500 S&W and won't but have shot a 475 Linebaugh with a 400 gr at 1000 fps, and there is something to be said for heavy large diameter bullets moving at a moderate velocity.  Recoil is easy to handle  yet they hit a bit like a D9 Cat,

The important thing is to keep displacement velocity under 135 max for fastest kills.  Your load is quite a bit over that, which I think might be the reason it traveled as far as it did.   On the other hand, large hole do not fail to make animals expire quite promptly.    What I'm saying here is to the  readers who have a .4+ caliber revolver up to .45, you don't need to get a .500 to get this kind of kill.  Just read this forum over and you'll get my recommendations.

Actually the DV on this load is 117 I believe? .41 (.500-.090)x 1140 (fps) divided by 4= 116.85

Elk didn't go very far and I was certainly happy with the performance of the bullet. I have a freezer full of elk to attest to how well it worked.

That is excellent work! I recent shot a nice bull with a 338-06 JDJ in a 15" Encore...also shot a big cow last year with the same gun. Now I have a serious interest in shooting an elk with a revolver...I have been researching guns/calibers...I think I'm torn between a FA in .475 and 500, I'm sure either none will work.

Thanks for posting your real life .500we experience.

D.V for the above load was in the perfect range, and could have been a bit higher, with max  that I recommend being 125/130.

It seems that most of us 'needing' a new firearm would do well to look at the guns they already have, and play with what it can produce for a D.V.   If it developes at least 100 and up to 130. a larger caliber and more powerful gun is a waste of money.

Flip side of the coin --------- sometimes we just have to try something new.  And that's a powerful need!
