OK.... Now That really works me up
Yea you are right and I know a few with that mentality... Kind of goes along with magnumitis ..... If its not a brand new double belted double magnum +++P then it wont even kill a squirrel and you are inhumane to even think about shooting a deer with it.... I think most of those 400 yard shots is because most of them dont have the skill to get any closer to a deer. I knew an old fella that was ragged on quit a lot for passing up shots beyond 100 yards. He would always reply " I am HUNTING ". One afternoon at the hunting camp a deer walked out in an alfalfa field around 400 yards away and they started in on him pretty heavy. with great consteration he walked into the cabin came out with his rifle and with one off hand shot dropped that deer like a rock. Pitched his knife to one of them who was not laughing any more and told him to go get it and it better be clean. Found out a little later he was a sniper in WW1. That old boy forgot more about hunting and shooting than I will probably ever know.

I made them drag that deer in to the cabin also.

Or was that another 400 yard offhand shot you were talkin about?

Hey I wouldn't mind being re-introduced in Montana!  I just turned 33 last month.  Actually, I wouldn't mind being just plain introduced in Montana seeing as I haven't been there yet.

As long as there is plenty of prey I should be able to take hold.  I've already proved myself a capable procreator (4 children  ).  I promise I won't interbreed with those modern in-line lizards either.

Just tell the Montana F&G to put a trap in my driveway.  I'll shuttle my family and my flintlock into it.  They can turn us loose in the wilderness.

Black Jaque,

If you haven't smoked your pole (don't get dirty on me) - in Montana, You haven't lived.  Sometime you are gonna havta try the Jordan (700 area) area for deer or antelope.  It truely shines in that area.  More deer than people - more everything than people out there.

But you havta bring earplugs and carry a club.  You need the earplugs to stop from hearin the deer shout "Shoot me Black Jaque, shoot me" and the club is to club the littler deer outa your way sos you can get to tha biguns.

Really!

Black Jaque's cannonball analogy is right on the money! Those big balls sure make a splash. I'm still stalling on my smoothbore flinter purchase, but since I don't think I want it to be too close to my .58, I think I'm gonna make it BIG!

rollingb, That's what I was thinking too. Some years lots of turkeys, depending on the weather, and we are usually up to our ....., well you know what....., in geese here , so I think I can find a reason to work up a good shot load. Mostly I just want to shoot, hunting is secondary to me now, althought it was the other way around not to many years ago, when the kids were small and the debts were large :(  (Hmmmmmmm I wonder if their momma had anything to do with that, she's gone and they are still here) :-D

Bigger IS better!!!
My smoothrifle is .72 cal (12g) I can load it with ball, buck & ball, shot, nails, rocks, small cats...just about anything I can jam down the bore.
I can use it on anything from tree rats to elk, and doves to turkey.  The nice thing about smoothbores is that they do not require pure lead.  They will shoot WW just fine.

Can't say enough good things about them.
The only drawback is when shooting patched balls, my 2 1/2" ticking patch looks like a matress flying through the air :-D I usually use just a fiber wad nowdays.
Thanks!

Bob,.... I agree!! :D
The only "other" problem with the "big bores", is when yore at a smoothbore "shoot'n match",... 25-30 of those "big" balls in yore shoot'n-bag,.... will git purty heavy darned quick!! :)

Yeah...but when they count by cutting the line, it's dang near always a bulls eye!  Some folks count by the center of the hole...heck, that's no fun.  You have to count the hole and THAT's where the big bores come into their own.  I shot a 92 one morning, shooting againts in-liners with scopes...they weren't happy

But you are right about one thing.  I only keep a small handful of ball in the pouch.
Thanks!

I gotta get one of them big bore flinters one of these days
lets see .... house payment.... big bore.... house payment.... big bore
HMMMMMMM...
Well when I do get to it I am not going to bother with a pouch.. I'm using a caddy and instead of brown bess I'll call her BIG BERTHA... :-D

BTW Bob.... when loading cat I found it best to load against the direction that the fur lays cause the fur bumps out and you dont get as much blowby :)

POWDER-PATCH-AND BALL SAYS IT ALL!!!!!! As far as flight charactoristics,I only have 1"elevation,deviation from 0 to 100 yards out of my renegade.Using 80 gr 3f wano match,.490rb covered with .015 patch.cant get that flat with a heavy conical. :-)

Whitecloud,

That's a good point.  Even if the conical stays within the "kill" zone from zero to 100, the arch can really work against you in timber.

I've often been in the situation where a branch was obscuring a part of the deer.  But enough vitals were showing that a shot would be reasonable.  However, if the bullet were to rise 2" over the path it would connect with the branch rather than ducking under it and hitting the target.

Another plus for the velocity of the roundball.

You got a limb in the way, that's the time to shoot the cat.  You pop it out over the deer.  The deer hear's this gosh awful scream flying over it and landing of the far side.  That naturally scares the snot outa the deer and it takes off headed away from that screamin singed pile of fur.  As it runs by ya, ya jus stab the thing with your pig sticker - err - deer sticker.  Works most near every time.
