Range Report
« on: December 04, 2011, 09:05:39 AM »
I shot my new .356 Win Handi and my older 30-30 today. Both of them shot extremely well with loads they preferred. The .356's custom barrel is the smoothest barrel I have ever seen! Cleaning is a snap and the bore patch was never snagged and felt like it was dragging over glass.

The .356 Win shot the 220gr Speer FP the best. At 100yds, the first two shots cut nearly the same hole and the third one was pulled ;)  to 5/8" away. It did not shoot that well again though. But that's fine, that just tells me what it likes is what it likes. I did get a few 1 1/2" groups shooting some of the Barnes 200gr TTSX bullets and the higher powder charge loads from the 220gr Speer. All loads were using H4198 powder.

The 30-30 surprised me a bit by shooting the 150gr Sierra GK bullets into 1/2"-3/4" groups using H4895. Velocity was close to 2300fps. I shot those, the 125gr Nosler BTs, Hornady 130gr SPs and the 165gr Ranch Dog 30cal cast bullets. The RDs didn't shoot as well as I would have liked, but they do show alot of potential. The other bullets didn't shoot well enough to mention anything new about them. :(

Also, I fire formed 20 .308 cases for use as .358 cases. I shot 5gr of Bullseye with Cornmeal and toilet paper packing. That was a first for me! It's very interesting seeing white confetti on the range, almost looked like snow when it was blowing back at me on the wind. All cases look good.

More to follow after I make a few adjustments and have more time to shoot. My wife's new job is cramping my shooting time... :-\

Thanks, Dinny

I have tried H4895 and H322 so far. I have some of the H335, perhaps I'll try that next. :)

How is the 322 doing? I plan to try that next. Not that I need any better accuracy, but it may be a winner over the chrony...

Steve,
It did not fare well in my testing. The velocity was over 2300fps, but the groups were over 2". :(

So I'm guessing that somewhere between 29-33gr of H335 will work for the 125s?

I think that I am at 35. Don't quote me on that tough, I would have to consult my logs.

*EDIT* 34, and that's max according to hodgdon.

Dinny-
I was also at the range today and I have given up on the 130 hornady sp in my 30-30. they shoot well enough for deer at 100 for most but not well enough for me. The 160 ftx shoot well with the leverlution powder but will get some 150 grain 308 and give them a try. Was a great day at the range.

Don't give up on that bullet until you have thoroughly tested it with W748. That and RL7 are on my grocery list to buy and test.

I have ran it with rel7 and h4198 and have gotten decent results say 11/2 at 100the but I know this gun can shoot better as experienced with heavier bullets. Just went through my last 100one bullets so I think I am going to try something in the 150back range

I have another round of reloads to try in my .356 Handi. All of them are loaded with H335 powder as I have found it to be highly recommended by several reliable sources. As for bullets, I loaded the 200gr Hornady SP, 180gr Speer FP, Barnes 200gr TSX FB and 250gr Winchester Power-Points. Shooting ranges are a premium in this area and the best one is about a 45min drive away. I have acquired permission to hunt a half-section of land 3 miles South of my house. The farmer has left several dozen round bales to rot on the fence row and I'm gonna call him and see if he minds me shooting into them.

I had a realization the other day when I started loading again for the .356 Win. I opened my load book and found where I had a load listed out of sequence. It was the first load I fired from my Handi. It shot very well and I couldn't understand why the rest of my loads weren't shooting as well. As it turns out, that was a sole load of Sierra 225gr Spitzers. When I get the chance to load more, I'll throw a few more into the mix and see how they compare to the others. This time they will be in-sequence and I'll be able to accurately document their performance.

More to follow after I get a chance to shoot 'em.

Thanks, Dinny

Good news Dinny!!

In my 307 H335 and a 165RN have proved very accurate! ONE hole at 50yards! (It was also a good one in my 358Winchester BLR)
LONG ago I arrived a WW748 powder for all 30-30 loads. I have yet to see one that didnt shoot well with a max loading of that powder with a 170G bullet. If you  look at the manuels you will see that the recomended charges for that powder have been going down over the years. Back in the early 80's it was in the upper middle 30's today its about 30. My own loading is above current maximums but has proven to show no pressure signs from my barrels.

Good luck,
 CW

Dinny, look behind those round bales before you shoot.   One round bale, especially a rotten one, won't stop a .35 cal bullet at 2400 fps.  It'll slow it down, and it won't go far afterward.  I've shot trash crossbow bolts right through them. ;)

Pete,
There are a few places where they're placed side by side three wide. I'll line them up with my target so I get better stopping power.

We're finally getting the rain we needed months ago so it will be another day or so... :(

Thanks, Dinny
