I don't understand what all the accuracy trashing is all about with Rugers. I have three of them and they all shoot fine. I have two All Weather MKII's in 25-06 that will cut the same hole with the right loads and a Tang Safety in 30-06 that is under a minute.

I agree with you, my Ruger M77 MKII in 270 Winchester absolutely loves any 150 grain bullet and IMR-4831. This rifle is all factory walnut and gloss blued finish, and wears a Leupold Vari-X II 3-9x40mm scope. She has a very crisp trigger and will easily shoot MOA.

I agree with Swampman on the Remingtons.  If your patient and savvy you will find a nice 700 for under 400.00.  And every 700 i've had my hands on were sub - moa.  Which I cannot say for the savage, winchester and ruger rifles i've owned new.

I'm looking forward to the new Ruger American. I like all guns and have quite a few rugers and remingtons (more rugers) and all shoot excellent. I think this new ruger will be a hot seller, I'll be picking up a 270 and 308 when they start trickling out. I used to be high on remington until I saw what they started doing to the Marlin name. Remington should be embarrassed. Bring on the Ruger American.

What has Remington done to descredit the Marlin brand name?

Drooping barrels, miss-aligned sights, extremely poor finishing (wood and metal), etc. Take a few minutes and look at the marlinowners forum, especially the rant section. Remington even stopped producing Marlin firearms for a period of time to get production issues under control.

Marlin was going down hill when Remington bought them.

Again I agree with Swampman.  A number of compaines that Ceberus bought had very poor QC including Marlin, Bushmaster, and even H&R.  Since Ceberus acquired these compaines QC has shown a steady improvement.

Marlin was going down hill when Remington bought them.
That does not excuse Remington from shipping shoddy rifles.

Ruger has decided to get into the value priced rifle market. They decided to do it without whoring out their 77 by cutting corners. Remember John Deere selling the Sabre line? They cut there own throats by not differentiating it enough from the premium line. There is no mistaking this rifle for a Hawkeye or any other in the line-up.

Savage produces a butt ugly, very accurate rifle for a low price. If that is more than what you want they have an even uglier rifle even cheaper and reasonably accurate as well.

Too many of you would not take a free Ruger with free ammo for life. They are not trying to woo you. But if you know little about rifles and you know that your brother in law shoots Rugers ( and raves ) and they are in your budget...

By this logic Chevy should produce 1 ton trucks, Corvettes and  Sedan Devilles. Nothing else, no compromises by God, none.

Well first of all, It's not technically Remington that is shipping the shoddy rifles.  It would be Ceberus.  And I would think that given the overall fact that they have been improving QC in all the lines they they own people would be happy about that.

Savage has accurate rifles these days but I wouldn't consider them to be low price anymore.  They have a Stevens line of rifles that is reasonably accurate with a nice fit and finish for a low cost.  Then they have an Axis series that isn't really that accurate and has a horrible finish.

I'll take a free Ruger and Ammo for life.  You'd have to be an Idiot to turn a deal like that down.  An M77 can be accurized to acceptable accuracy.

The brother in law part kinda baffles me... Is he a sniper or competitive long range marksman or something?

If Chevy only produced 1 type of truck, 1 type of large car, 1 type of medium car, and 1 type of compact car, and 1 sports car, then they would all be cheaper due to lower costs of MFG and easier to get parts for.  There would be a greater market for aftermarket parts and would have an extended ownership life due to the fact that spare parts would be around for years.

The same logic goes towards gun MFG.

BIL part, I know little about guns, my BIL however does, he shoots Rugers for some reason... therefore I might just give them a try. Oh, lordy those guns sure are spendy but wow here is a Axis and here is one of those Rugers, I'll buy the Ruger. The preceding is what I refer to as a hypothetical.

Chevy and every other auto maker has many models with many trim levels to meet every segment of the buying public. Cheaper is not always better Were that true Accura would not have made it past birthing to become one of the most respected auto brands in the world, rebadged and retuned Honda automobiles by and large. Cripes I hear those touting Savage and there three lines Ruger goes there and they are now the scurge of the gun industry?

Free Rugers ? Well Swampy is the sort to turn down a free rifle if it does not where the right stamping.  There are haters everywhere about everything, I try not to listen to  everything I hear. The gun may be an abomination but until they ship who of those posting know anything about them?

I'll take a free Ruger #1 or #3.  They are probably the best in their class.  I also like their Single Action Revolvers.  I can tolerate a 10-22.  No real interest in the rest of their products.

My gripe about Bill Ruger is that the man never had an original thought.  Granted he pulled of a few neat twists and ultimately came up some some good sellers, but compare that to the design concept of a Remington 700?  I was a Remington hater for years.  I never owned one, but I knew I didn't want one.  I had Savages.  I had Winchesters.  I had CZ's, Rugers... you name it.

I give into my Dad and best friends urgings for me to try a Remington 700.  So I went out and bought an SPS tactical .308.  Slap on a cheap scope and take it to the gun range.  W/ Black Hills 168 gr. Match Ammo it shoots 1/2 MOA out of the box!  My friends Remingtons all shot under MOA w/ factory ammo.  Every other Bolt Gun i've ever owned never shot less than 1 MOA.  Most averaging 1.24 or 1.5" groups.

So after trying everything the gun I hated for so long is my new competition rifle because I can't not shoot it good.  Worked up some 155gr. Hornady A-Max bullets and I have a gun that is shooting less than 1" @ 300 yards.  It's crazy.

the new ruger is what it is. Its a cheap entry level gun but imo that market is pretty flooded allready. Im sure theyll sell though as some guys think that if it has ruger on it its something special. I just hope they have enough common sense to not transition the existing hawkeyes to that homely action.

Lloyd,

I'm sure Ruger has no intentions in making that new action their standard over their M77's.  My point is that the gun MFG's should stick with their best selling actions and then build different level guns off that action.  Such as Remington has done w/ their 700 series rifles.  You can get a 400.00 package rifle that has a really flimsy stock and a parkerized finish, or you can get one that is decked out with all the bells and whistles that will run a couple grand.

There are entire aftermarket catalogs devoted to nothing but aftermarket accessories for the Ford F150.  You can make it faster.  You can improve the handling.  You can jack it up and put lift kits on them... ect.

Ruger could just as easily spent less money on R&D for the new "American Rifle"  and invested that into making less expensive M77's.  That way you could sell more of your bread and butter, have a better aftermarket and surplus market, and have a better rifle that a person could customize to his or her budget.

A timeless design such as the 700, 1911, model 70, M77, 110, AR15, and so on will have an aftermarket parts market and surplus market for decades to come.  These cheap, low budget rifles they are mfg now will have no parts availability in 10 years.

To go back to the automotive analogy that was brought up earlier.  Take the F150 for example.  I can go out and easily buy any part for an F150 from 30 years ago.  Their a dime a dozen.  They range from a white, v6, vinyl seats, rubber floor board model, all the way to the plush, big V8, saddle leather heated seats, with a power sunroof and mirrors version.

If you want an F150, then your budget dictates how nice of an F150 you can afford.  And there are TONS of options available to you.

Happened to stop at one of the Academny sports and outdoors stores in Houston area today and inquired about the Ruger American rifle.  Clerk handling me was aware of this new rifle and checked his computer for it.  Turned out rifle was in their system already but Academny warehouse showed none in inventory.  Asked clerk, what their American selling price in computer was....$380 was his reply.  MSRP on this rifle is $440, if I remember correctly.

If you can find a pre-Remington made Marlin you will find one fine shooting machine.  I have one in 7mm-08 and it is easy sub-MOA.  I almost made a friend of mine cry with s high dollar Remington mountain rifle cry when I out shot him with it.

Bought a Marlin XL7 in 25-06 shortly after this rifle was first introduced.  Bought a Marlin XS Heavy Varmit barrel 308 about 3 months ago.  Sad to say, I'm happier with accuracy of my PRE-Cerebus/Remington Marlin 25-06 than my 308Win.

Now by that logic you might well be driving an F-10. Things evolve, that Model 700 didn't fall from heaven into Remingtons hands they kept evolving from older designs. Ruger may well have a turd, they might just have a perfectly good barreled action too. Five years from now that could well be wrapped in walnut, and a high luster finish. Ruger Single Sixes started as a cheap alternative to a Colt New Frontier, no doubt most folks poo poo'ed them as crappy knock offs.

Look I ain't carrying water for Ruger, for the most part I wouldn't have one. I expect to own a Blackhawk soon enough, but past that they don't sell anything that interests me.
