Older I get the less I shoot ?
« on: December 15, 2011, 07:03:26 PM »
Don't let the title fool you its not that I go shooting any less its just that I shoot less when I go.
When I was in my early 20s several Friends & I would go out to the Mojave desert to explore and empty out 30 round mags for no better reason then it was just fun to do.
Now that I am getting older I find myself more into precision with single shot contenders & bolt action rifles, even reloading seems to be more of a way to relax then a way to save money on ammo.

funny how things change but then not really.  ???

I don't shoot anymore. Think it has been 2 years since i fired a gun. This has more to do with health reasons and no place to shoot anymore. I owned a house on 16 acres. First thing i did was set up a rifle range. Did a lot of shooting then. When my wife passed away i sold the place and bought a small house in town. At one time i owned 27 guns. Sold most of them and am down to 10 now. Most of the guys i shot with are long gone and to me it isn't fun to shoot alone.

I can shoot pretty well anywhere or time I want but my main shooting Buddy died last year and theres not a lot of joy shooting alone. My wife joins me occasionally and thats great. All my reloading and casting buds are gone too. POWDERMAN.  :( :(

I too used to take the .22rf and burn through a brick or two just shooting for the fun of it.  Today I go to the range and I might shoot 20 rounds.  I usually take two or three diffarant guns and only shoot five shots each.

I don't really enjoy reloading.  It's a chore I need to do.  I don't reload to save money.  I reload to get the precission loads I want.  Also I live in Alaska where we have extreame tempatures.  There is some new powders made just for extreame changes in tempature, yet no one loads them yet.

What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

I usually break up reloading into stages, one day re size & deprime then the next day prime & expand, then powder & seat.
I can stretch out a batch 0ff 200 pistol rounds to about 4 or 5 days 20 or 30  minutes here & there so its like I didn't spend any time at all.  :D

  Hello quickrick:
I remember those days in my early 20's in the Mojave desert also. We would go out in the toolies and shoot jacks. We also shot about everything else also, not destructively, just burning powder. The jacks were plentiful, get a brick of 22's at Triangle Gus Shop, dump them in our pockets and start walking, what good fun back in the mid 60's.
I still enjoy shooting but as serveral have said, not as much fun alone.
Reloading is still fun but tinkering around in the smokehouse is more fun.
Thanks for the reminder of the Mojave Desert.

WOW smokehouserex you got me beat by about 20 years or so, for us it was the early 80s when we started exploring Mojave.
I still go out there quite offten but its to go off roading with my So Cal Baja crew (  I still manage to blast off a few rounds though ).

I guess I'm blessed. Donna and I had over 17 foster boys over the years and now some of them stop by with their kids and we usually end up shooting at cans.
Living in the woods, I can shoot any time I want.
Find a kid and introduce him to shooting a .22. You both will have a lifetime of memories.

Plague and poison has reduced the prairie dog population in the are where I live. So I dont hunt - shoot them as much as I have had, but at 76 years I still get after them.. I wont to try out  17 Hornet and 5.7X28MM rifles on prairie dogs befor I slow down any more.  One summer few years ago I shot a bit over 2,000  prairie dogs, its unlikley that I will do that this summer.

I still like to do some plinking, but only when the weather is nice. Trouble is when the weather is nice I've got a million other things that need doing. Having a flock of grandkids has got me back at it more than I was. I'll let some of the work slide to help them get up to speed. The kids kind of came in two age groups. Got 4 at jr high age and they are getting pretty proficient. Then there's another three that are just starting.
