slugs with roll crimp that doesnt touch the slug= bad?
« on: December 16, 2011, 03:02:18 AM »
I have a few slug loads that are roll crimped.  But the crimp doesnt go down all the way to the slug.  Everythign is tight, the components dont rattle around; but I have a question.

If fired, can the crimp a few millimeters ahead of the slugs starting position in the hull act as a bore obstruction?

I am thinking: in a normally crimped hull, the crimp begins to unroll as soon as the slug moves.  Whereas in these ones, the slug will have a running start at the crimp.  Only a couple millimeters but still?

Will this cause me any problems?
Anyone have any personal or practical experieice to share?

Merry Christmas!

cpileri,

I had the same question last week when I loaded some 3" 20 ga hulls with lyman sabots.  Since the powder charge I was using is fairly light, approx 1,200 fps, I decided to try these "almost" roll crimped rounds.  Didn't notice any pressure signs on the hull, gun or primer and the recoil didn't feel any different.  The report from the gun was much louder than this same powder/bullet combo with a proper crimp, so I am thinking you are correct regarding a short roll crimp acting like a barrel obstruction.  If I had tried this with a maximum powder charge things might have been a bit more exciting.

Sometimes the crimp is on the sabot and not the slug. I have noticed with some factory loads if you shake them the slug moves inside so I guess it don't hurt anything.
RIP Mike. Died on July 14th, around 2am, with his family at his side, he went peacefully to be with god.

Remmy Accutips and copper solids are roll crimped to the top of the sabot, not the slug.
