Looking for .45 Colt SASS type
« on: December 05, 2011, 06:18:36 AM »
I have been doing some movie work lately and need a single action .45 Colt.  I have a Hawes .45 now, but I need one with the groovedrear sight so I can portray an 1880's persona better.  I looked into a .44 black powder/.45 cartridge conversion, but I won't use the Black Powder, so I see no reason to go that route.  I bought my Hawes for $200 about 4 years ago and cannot afford to pay upwards of $500.  I plan to use it mostly for movie shoots, but I want one that can either be used or can be fixed so I can shoot it as well.  I spend a lot of time on horseback and need a revolver for both myself and my wife.  Thanks in advance for any help.

It is going to be kind of tough to spend much less than $500. The Hawes you have has a sight other than a grooved rear? What kind of sight does it have? In your price range a Heritage comes to mind. About everything else in good condition is going to run around $400+.

Movie work you don't do anything with ammo other than blanks, and I've yet to see  anybody get squirrely because they didn't think the sight groove was right on a handgun in  a movie, and it used to be dang seldom anything other than an approoved prop gun was allowed on set....So I'm not getting quite why the Hawes wouldn't work.
The Ruger vaquero is a good companion piece. I prefer 5 1/2 inch barrels, carry's well enough while seated in the saddle, long enough barrel to get usable velocity and good sight radious.
In the 1920's "sheeple" was a term coined by the National Socialist Party in Germany to describe people that would not vote for Hitler. In the 1930's they held Hitler as the only one that would bring pride back to Germany and bring the budget and economy back.....

In that price range, Cimarron/Uberti comes to mind. They are usually well made, & pretty authentic to the Colt.

Unless you're making your own "home movies" I sure as heck wouldn't use one of my guns. As in, "toss them guns over there", I just cringe when they throw their pistolas and rifles like they were a chunk of firewood. THEY EVEN THROW THEM WHEN THEY'RE HORSEBACK !!!!! yeah, they'll shoot real good after a couple of those....maybe thats why you never see anybody going back to pick um' up. Ranch13 is correct though, only prop guns on a movie set. For your own personal use, out and about horseback and such, that Hawes should work just dandy.
