Model 83 project is finally finished
« on: June 25, 2011, 07:36:32 AM »
Been working on this pair of Model 83s for a while and they are finally done.  Crowning touch was the Black Powder Chamfer on the cylinders by Hamilton Bowen.  The grain on the grips is very noticeable on the long barrel gun.  John at Freedom Arms did all the other work.  Here they are:

...a lot of subtlety in that pair. I'm not sure what a 'black powder chamfer" is or does, but that mild bevel on the cylinder adds some character and a softness to the look of the whole gun.

The grain you wanted to highlight is pretty clear through your photos. Funny, I always thought micarta was a smooth synthetic material of just one single uniform color until I got white micarta on my 83. They look a lot like the grain on your 7.5". Regardless, both are sharp.

If you haven't done so already, I think you should post these on the FA Eye Candy thread. Be a shame for these not to get more exposure. And after that you should put that camera down, load some ammo and get these shooters dirty!

The Black Powder Chamfer is the mild bevel you refer to.  It's supposed to duplicate what came on the black powder Colt Single Actions when first made.  The purpose is to prevent the holster from getting chewed up but as you say it helps the looks as well.

I regularly shoot these two guns, albeit with mid-range loads, 11 grains of Unique over a 250 grain Lead SWC with a gas check.  Accuracy is quite good and MV is between 1100 and 1200 fps.

Definitely worth the re- view, those are really beautiful guns.  Still shooting them?

Actually, I shoot these the most of all my single actions, albeit with reduced loads.  My favorite is a 250 grain GC Keith over 11 grains of Unique.  Accurate and a lot of fun to shoot.

That's good to know, cause they should be shot even if they are showpieces like that. Beautiful pair.
