Buffalo Hunt
« on: February 01, 2012, 02:59:24 AM »
I searched the forums and found some info but it seems like a lot has changed since this was discussed.  My brother and I want to go on a Buffalo hunt for meat and trophies. I can't find a price lower then $4000 in all parts of the country.  Does anyone know out there where we could go for a decent price? Unless that is the going rate of course.

If you want a buffalo hunt there are a handful of states that issue tags by drawing.  I know Utah and Alaska do, I think Arizona might as well?  The tags are considered once in a lifetime and are expensive, but less than $4000.  It will probably take you some time to draw one.  There may also be a few available in Canada without a draw, you'd have to look.  I also know they do hunts for Yellowstone buffalo that escape the border of the park.  Not sure how the tags are allotted there, but you could check with Wyoming.

If you want a buffalo "hunt" they're all over the place.  For the right price I'll turn a pair out in the pasture for you.  Every once in a while I get an email with an add for a "meat" hunt at one of these places where you can shoot a cow for quite a bit less than $4000.  My guess would be that with the price of beef being what it is, the buffalo market is probably also very strong.  Of course the drought made feeding those things real expensive in the Southwest this year.  You might find better prices there.

There are a number of "buffalo ranches" in Nebraska Montana, and the Dakota's that will sell you a 2 yr old bull or cow for around 1800.
In the 1920's "sheeple" was a term coined by the National Socialist Party in Germany to describe people that would not vote for Hitler. In the 1930's they held Hitler as the only one that would bring pride back to Germany and bring the budget and economy back.....

Back in 2002, I took a 4 year old cow bison at Catron Ranch located near Camp Crook, South Dakota.  Cost was $800.

The shot was palced at butt of the ear from about 125 yards.  I was prone on the prairie shooting my .308 carbine.  The animal dropped on the spot.  I spent $600. to have the head mounted which I sold (eBay) to a steakhouse in Ohio for $1,000. plus shipping.

I had a great time and it cost me very little for such a large amount of tasty meat.

Thanks for the suggestions guys I'll check out catron ranch for sure and some of the states with the drawings.  One thing I didn't want to do it go to a place where it was like shooting fish in a barrel.  Again thanks for the input

Unless you get really lucky and draw one of the wild bison permits, anyplace you go will be the equivilent of wandering out in some ranchers pasture and shooting one of his cows.
For the bison hunt here in Wy, you need to apply right now for the priority list, then if you get a number high enough up ,when it's your turn you'll get a call and you'll have 48 hours to get to Jackson or Cody, depending on where they have the buffalo that are needing shot..... You could get the call anywhere from Sept -January, so it's really pretty dicey and a person needs to have pretty flexible time schedule.

I would not have thought of Ebay as a place to find a hunt.  Might have to check into that.

this may be a little late but you might check out High Adventure Ranch in Missouri, stopped there 2 years ago while returning to N.H from a hunt in wyoming. They had a great package for a buffalo.I was only looking for meat and but ended up getting a skull mount and a beautiful rug from the local taxidermist there They had a special for around $ 2200. Three days ,two nights, food, lodging, and meat  processing, vacuum wrapped and frozen ready to go the next day. Food was great, cabins were clean and warm (if you stay in one of the cabins make sure that you keep the gate closed on the porch, or the goats will be knocking on your door). Real friendly folks and lots of area to hunt and a good selection of critters.
If you like check out some of my hunt photos at
