Skinner Tactical on an 1894 .44
« on: November 09, 2011, 12:27:55 PM »
I'm in the planning stages to set up a pair of 1894s in .44 Magnum for my son and I. These will be iron sights only, 200 yds. max, all purpose rifles. They'll also be shooting cast bullets over 2400, working to a load that'll take elk ... at appropriate range with a well placed shot. I have some trading/selling to do still to get the $ for the project, and I'm already planning to swap out the sights. I had initially though of XS as they seem to be pretty popular, but I wasn't real happy with their apertures. And then I saw that GBO sponsor Skinner makes "tactical" sights for front and rear. Don't know about tactical, but I like the wings to protect the sights, and the lower profile. I've only ever used Williams peeps, but obviously lots of folks here like Skinners from the posts I found in the search function. I've read one review that said changing the dope on the sights, i.e. when changing loads, can be tricky.

Anyone go through a decision process between XS and Skinners for an 1894, and care to share with me their rationale, and ultimate decision?

I've got a Marlin 1894 (bought in 1977), though I've only had a Williams 5D peep sight on the gun, and later installed My Weaver steel tubed 1.5x scope on top.
No experience with the other 2 sights mentioned, as I'm usually one to mount a scope on a rifle, save for My Winchester '94, because it's a 1970 Cowboy Commemorative.
Hope You find what You're seeking!  8)

Got in on this thread late and have no experience with either sights but I have a 44 mag carbine that I will put sights on and am the same position you were when you posted.  I like both companies.  I recently had a dealing with Mr Skinner and will say that he is a prince of a fellow.  I have no doubt he will stand behind his products and you would be satisfied with them.   I have also seen XS sights and scout rails mounted on a carbine and they ,ook good, too.
Think I may do what any normal rifle looney would do...
I'll buy the sights from Skinner and the scout rail from XS.   :)
Yeah, I'm a rifle looney

For me, using peepsights at 200 yd would not be workable.  The use of a good peep like Dr. Skinners and a scout mounted scope would be a great combo.  DP
