New Encore Rifle
« on: January 16, 2004, 06:50:43 AM »
I recently joined the ranks by purchasing a Encore rifle in .270 Win.
I topped it with a Leupold Rifleman 3-9X40 scope and installed a laminated stock and forend (nutmeg) from E. Arthur Brown Co.
My initial plan was to modify my older model Contender to 30-30.
The Encore cost about $100 more, but I'm very pleased with its ability to take larger calibers. It also has far more barrel choices.
The Encore was bore sighted by the dealer I purchased it from. I was impressed with the 1/2" group produced by the first box of ammo (130 grain Winchester). The groups were 5" high, however. I dropped it to 3".
I think I have a flat-shooting hard-hitting deer rifle now. Far better than the 30-30 route.

Congrats and welcome aboard.  Sounds like you have a nice setup.  I am looking into a 270 barrel also.  Is yours a TC factory barrel or something else?  Also, what does your setup weigh?

I have the factory 24" tapered barrel.
I have no means to weigh the rifle, but I estimate it weighs about 7 lbs with the scope installed.
The recoil is very tolerable with the 130 grain cartridge. I plan to handload some 140 and 150 grain loads for comparison.
Most of my deer hunting will be with the 130 grain load, however.
