Advantages of a Straight Grip stock on a rifle?
« on: January 01, 2012, 04:48:25 PM »
I really like the looks of the straight gripped rifles but was wondering if the design offered any advantages other than comestics? I understand people are individual and opinions vary so I was just trying to gather opinions.

The two rifles Im thinking of them for are a 45-70 and and 357 mag.

Most English SXS shot guns have a strait wrist so you can move your hand easier to access the double triggers.
In a rifle it was cheaper to make the strait wrist for rifles than a prince of wales or pistol grip.
I think they look good but unless you are planning on putting in set triggers.  Tthe strait wrist has no advantage.

As I get older and joints get stiffer :'( , I find the pistol grip to be more comfortable for me.  DP

other than the already mentioned double trigger, and some have an easier time with sight acquisition with a straight stock, some prefer the pistol grip.  The only time I have noticed a distinct advantage is with a lever action rifle.  With a straight stocked lever gun the lever throw can be short enough to be able to keep both hands on the stocks, fire a shot, cycle the action and fire again with both hands never having left the stock.

The straight stock hurts my hands. They just don't bend as easy anymore.

I prefer the straight gripped stocks for a couple reasons.....one my first centerfire rifle was a winchester m94, it's straight gripped and i've been shooting it for just shy of 50 years, so it's what i'm used to and the other reason is like the man said they just plain look cool to me. I like my Handi's with straight grip stocks and peep sights myself.......Mike

I have to agree with those who carried the old Winchester 94.

The straight grip worked great for the small light weight carbine, and when walking the woods you either carried it low around the beltline, with both hands across your body, or lying across your right shoulder with the muzzle pointed skyward and to the rear, and with both of those carrying positions a pistol grip stock would place your wrist in a bent and less natural position, which over a period of time would cause you some wrist discomfort.

Notice how you see a lot of field hunters carry their shotguns or rifles over the shoulder gripping the barrel of that fine shotgun, with the stock pointed skyward.   It's not just for safety reasons!

For a walk around carbine I think it's perfect and it does have a useful function other than looking cool, and those old carbines weren't meant to be range rifles and safe queens.
My culled down Handi's are the 45-70, and then I have a few others to keep it company...357 Mag/Max. .45 LC/.454 Casull Carbine, .243 Ultra, and 20 gauge Tracker II.

i have a 357 mag rifle and a 30-30 and like i said i shoot em with peep sights....so that makes em 100 yd guns considering the sights. Without scopes i can wrap my hand around the reciever. Makes for a real "handi" carry ;D ....sorry about the pun....well,not really sorry,it's early here......Mike

I hear ya, Mike!

I've got the 45LC classic carbine and tried like heck not to scope it, and tried several different sight combinations but unless the light was just right I didn't feel confident using it on game with my eyesight.

I finally mounted a fixed 4 power Nikon scope on it, and it's still fairly compact, and with my hands I don't have a problem griping the receiver with my fingers, and the heel of my thumb resting over the scope, and griping it comfortably with one hand.

The only plus I see is speed. My favorite shotguns have straight stocks, we are talking upland type hunting here, and I find they mount much faster. For target or varmint hunting I would prefer a thumbhole even. General everday use, the pistol grip is more practical.

Straight grip works better for me. Faster to mount, works great with open sights and looks cool.

The "kewl" look of a straight stock is fine for some, they hurt my wrist and I can't seem to find the right spot to get a good hold. To me a thumb hole pistol grip like the after market stock for the Handi's are my top choice.

I first started shooting a pistol grip lever, but now prefer a straight stock, they just seem more comfortable to me. I think its more a personal preference than anything.

+1 one, I've always loved carrying my M81 BLR but it's because of the lever, I hunted with my 30-30AI Handi with straight grip Ultra stock a year and ended up not liking it after the first day packing it, just wasn't comfortable at all, I prefer pistol grip stocks on Handis. ;)

its really hard to say-I have several straight stocked milsurps that I love to shoot,an old single shot Husqvarna straight stocked .22-and a marlin 795 that I restocked with a boyds thumbhole stock. The .22 H&R ''20 guage ''survivor''feels pretty good.I have several ''pistol grip''hunting rifles that are nice too.About the only ones I don't like are the old rollover ''monte-carlo ''type that I once thought were great.[too heavy]There may be some advantage to a straight grip if you carry it in a scabbord type case.

+2  I feel more comfortable with the thumbhole or Handi grip stocks. Just could not get a good grip on the straight stocks.

I'm working with the Handi-grip stock on the 45-70 Talo Trapper, I've only used it on the 6x45 which I haven't hunted with, the 45-70 will be the real test to see how well it handles and carries hunting, it weighs a little less than a standard synthetic stock and has a better recoil pad, time will tell.  ;)

Tim,

How much does that setup weigh?

tell you what I DO like -and that is a schnable forend-it fits just nice in my  hand.I have several, and have reconfigured several of my stocks to have this type of forend.I see Handi offers some models with it.Its more than a ''European'' style-its very practical

That's pretty impressive considering the scope is included. I'd like to build a shorty 45-70 with straight grip/schnabel forend and open sights that somehow only weighs 5.75 lbs. I'd probably have to get the barrel fluted (if the barrel is even thick enough for that) to get the weight down that low.
