One of the "2 for's" done
« on: January 02, 2012, 07:51:49 AM »

You may remember the thread where I turned two barrels a cannon & a howitzer out of one piece of steel.... well rather than hunt for the thread I thought I would show you the final product, the cannon is my creation the wood base was created by it's new owner who is a carpenter at Colonial Williamsburg, the swivel yoke and tiller were built by a master blacksmith now retired from Colonial Williamsburg, all in all a respectable swivel gun with a one inch bore....

Base is painted in a light yellow ocher hand mixed from original formulas of the 18th C.

The swivel mount took some time as the blacksmith was not satisfied with the drawings provided and did further research on his own...

This shot shows the rest moved out of the way for firing.....

And here is the iron tiller it may look delicate but is robust enough for action.... the tiller and swivel yoke are designed so that they can be removed incase the owner wishes to mount the cannon on a more traditional carriage....

Sorry no powder can but if memory serves me the tube by itself is 15+ inches long not including the tiller...

KABAR2,

Very nice job on the barrel. Good to see some real forge welding and nice blacksmithing for a change. Well done.

;D That is one NICE Swivel Gun! Great workmanship on the Yoke and Tiller, too. The base would take some getting used to, ( talking about the color!), however, it looks like it will hold everything just fine! All in all, a neat looking piece! BoomLover

Thanks,

I forgot to mention when time permits there will be some hand forged hooks added along the side
of the base for ramer, sponge, worm etc.  hope to get some smoke and fire photo's next weekend,
Would like to see what it does with a 1 inch ball..... and grape of course.....

Very nice looking swivel. I like the idea of the swing-away rest!
