I saw no mention of liberal mind in the article - did I miss it? I note this took place in Canada, where there is no 2nd Amendment.

Some peeps here think I'm a liberal, yet I armed and advocate of an armed citizenry... whassup wit dat?
Jesus said we should treat other as we'd want to be treated... and he didn't qualify that by their party affiliation, race, or even if they're of diff religion.

The incident was in Canada and they have drastically different laws than we do here in the US of A. But for the life of me here or there I don't see what business it is of the school or the police if there is a gun in the house and a child both.

It is the job of parents, grandparents and others to make sure children are safe. That is not the job of the school other than on school property or of the police.

The best way to protect children from the danger a gun can be to them is thru educating them about guns and gun safety. My four year old grandson knows ya don't touch guns without first asking permission and waiting until it has been checked to be sure it is unloaded. He also knows how to do that on all types of guns. His dad was down here one day looking at one of my guns and Wyatt told him he had to first check it to be sure it wasn't loaded.

That child is as safe as is humanly possible for him to be around firearms because it has been drilled into his head for the majority of his life how to be safe. He would no more handle a firearm he were to come across here or anywhere else than he would be to stick his hand into a fire. Now he is prone to stick his hand into a fireant bed. He still seems to wonder why they don't like to play nice with him.

I taught my boys gun safety from day one and if they wanted to see or handle a gun they knew all they had to do was ask and it would be made safe and handed to them to look at. I took the mystery of guns out of the equation and replaced it with education about gun safety. When they were growing up when I new gun came into the house if they wanted to check it out they had only to ask and it would be checked to be sure it was unloaded and they were shown how to do that and then it was handed to them so there was no mystery and no reason to mess with one without asking.

Even at four years of age that lesson has been learned by my youngest grandson and he is safer than most adults are around guns. Shoud he ever encounter a loaded gun anywhere I am fully confident he will not be harmed by it cuz he knows the rules and does not break them. He's also a pretty darn good shot with his little 22 rifle. His hit ratio is well above 50% on the targets he shoots at even when they are some of my old pill bottles.

Education is the key to gun safety. Ignorance is the danger. Ya gotta take the mystery out of them and replace it with knowledge that the gun is very dangerous and must not ever be touched unless permission is first asked and it has been checked by an adult and assured safe. That includes showing the child not just yourself that it is empty. I would NEVER do it but I'd bet anything that if he was placed into a room full of loaded guns and left alone he'd not touch a one of them much less pick it up and point it at anything or anyone. He knows ya don't point guns at people.

Compare that to some child who's never been educated about them who will almost certainly pick them up and point them. The only way a gun in the house is a danger to a child is if that child has not be properly educated about gun safety from the time they are old enough to  walk.

I want my children and grandchildren to be safe as can be and the way to assure that safety is to give them knowledge of what to do and how to do it safely. The school isn't gonna give them that knowledge nor is the government. It's the job of parents and grandparents to impart that all important training to children. I've been handling guns since I was about five or six year old and while I wasn't taught much more than don't point them at people I've not shot anyone yet and don't figure I ever will. It takes knowledge to be safe not a noisy school and government.

GB. Good post. Thats how we have raised all of ours too. In my generation pretty well every man and boy in our small town hunted. We were all raised around guns and learned gun safety at an early age. My Dad and another guy got the school gymn for an evening and they demonstrated gun safety with all types of guns to all the kids there, and there were a lot of them different ages. Even taught how to cross a fence. Seems there are so many accidental disch and other accidents with kids today, adults too than when I was a kid. I'd imagine the  ratio of guns per household then was much higher than today, but the rate of  ADs and accidental shootings is much higher today. I only rememner ONE incident of an accidental shooting in all the years I was growing up in ILL, today it is  pretty well a weekly occurence. Sad. POWDERMAN.  :o :o

Well said, I did the same thing with my children.

I did both. I have some grandchildren with ADHD and gunproofing a child with ADHD just doesn't work. They are too impulsive. My dad had a phrase about that. "Better safe than sorry." I follow his advise.

My reasoning concerning my kids was that child-proofing my guns would only protect them from my guns.  Gun-proofing my kids would help to protect them in circumstances that I had no direct control over.  It doesn't hurt to secure the weapons, but education and familiarization can help turn a child's morbid fascination and curiosity concerning guns into love of the shooting sports and respect for the weapon's power.

Ironically, now that the house is empty of children (no grandkids yet) all of my guns are secured.

When the kids were in school all my guns had trigger locks on them not because of my children but I could not always watch or know who was in the house. My daughter now shoots skeet.Proper training and up bringing is a must!.
