Encore stock modification
« on: January 02, 2012, 12:24:01 PM »
Trying to tweak out the most accuracy from my .260 Remington 24" MGM barrel on my Encore.  It wears a Leupold 2.5x8 VarixIII and has the ProHunter style stock and forend.  I suspect that not anchoring my cheek at the same point on the scope for each shot is a limiting factor in the 1 to 1.5" groups that I have been able to achieve with Nosler and Sierra handloads, using the Nosler most accurate powder and load from their manual.  Does anyone have a method of raising the cheek rest on a stock to give a solid shot after shot anchor?  I have looked at the Brownell's site and have one of their pads on a Contender walnut stock and it works great.  Just skeptical about trying that on the Encore stock.  All suggestions will be most appreciated.  Thanks in advance.

I made a raised cheek pad on my Ruger M77 MKII rifle in 270 Winchester with black kitchen cabinet/toolbox liner pad and a black slip-on elastic 9 round cartridge stock holder.  I used electrial tape to hold it in place and the slip-on holder covers it.

Thanks for the suggestions..  I have made a temporary raiser with plastic and tape.  Shooting this afternoon at a new smaller target with the stock modification in place the group that was running  /-1.5" shrank to .915" @ 100yds. but the other load which had been  /-1" jumped to 1.715"..  The last shot (third) in each group was the "flier" so I am thinking maybe I was affected by the cold temp. light breeze or afternoon sun glare.  Only 8 rounds through the clean barrel so I do not suspect fouling.
