200 gr Cast for .357
« on: April 16, 2012, 04:20:36 AM »
Hi fellas,

I was thinking of loading some of these Cast Performance 200 gr WLNGC for my Blackhawk and Handi Rifle in .357. Do any of you use this combo for deer? I was wondering if these are too heavy for .357.

The only problem I can see with that bullet in a .357 mag is excessive OAL, however, this shouldn't be an issue with the Handi. I'm not sure about the BH, it may be OK.

Take a look toward the end of this thread.  There is some discussion that is pertinent to your quest.

I've never tried it in a revolver, but the guys I shoot cowboy levergun silhouette with, myself included, all use 200gr. RCBS bullets in our 357 leverguns to be able to knock down the 200M rams. Pistol bullets are no where near as accurate at that range and don't have sufficient momentum to drop the targets. The rifle bullets do the job, even when fired at relatively low velocity.

In a revolver you'll have to watch the overall length closely and remember that deep seated bullets drive up pressures quickly, especially with normal handgun powders. You may end up with two different loads for the two different guns.

From what I've seen, Blackhawk cylinders are plenty long enough.
But it wouldn't hurt to make up a dummy round with the intended bullet.

I agree with Anduril.  Make up a dummy round.

I use that bullet in my FA.  Works great for sillywet.  I also use an RCBS 200 and a Saeco 210 in different .357s or max's.  Each a little different due to throat or cylinder length.  What works in one gun may lock another solid.  I can play with 38 brass loaded mildly with that bullet in most of my guns.  Cannot with the magnum or max brass tho.....
