8 year olds first South Texas buck
« on: January 03, 2012, 03:03:33 AM »
This is my buddies son, Roman, with his first deer and my shorty topper youth deer hammer 30-30... As you can see, I took some GBO advice and mounted a Nikon Omega 1.65-5. It is a little bigger and bulkier than I wanted, but the eye relief is perfect, so I ordered 3 more this morning :)

Nice Deer for an 8 yr olds first. Congrats. He does look happy ;D

What scope rail is on there? I bought an Omega and had to get xtra high rings :( Is it the Nikoplex or BDC on that 30-30? Wondering as mine is on a 444.

The eye relief is really long on these scopes and your setup looks good from what I can see. Little dark in that area.

I'll have to look on my other computer for a better look at the rail. Thanks

Looked on other computer, looks like an Ultra rail. I wish I'd have seen this before I locktited and mounted my scope. I have an Ultra rail but think I will shoot it as is for now. The eye relief is almost too long on the Omegas. Nice scopes though. I wish the dimensions were more like the Pro Staffs, I'd have more of them ;)  Still Might ;D

Bgvmt, it is a Weaver 82 base with PRW low rings. I had to cut a new cross slot just in front of, and slightly overlapping the forward most mounting screw hole so that it would accept the forward position of the rear ring, and I am not terribly happy with the fact that the scope mounts in front of any vertical support, but it seems relatively rigid and shoots right at MOA. I do plan to install a block in the rear sight dovetail, machine it to mate to the bottom of the base, tap it and secure the base there for additional support and piece of mind.

Spanky,

I think it might be quite difficult to retrieve, except that we got him an H&R 28ga last year which I am now getting a 357MAX bbl fitted for.

I don't even have my own kids, and I still don't think it gets any better, Hillbill. There is just something extra gratifying about taking kids hunting that makes it even better than hunting itself.
