Case Hardened SB2?
« on: January 06, 2012, 03:08:54 AM »
Is there any such thing as a case hardened SB2? The Classics, maybe?

I have one that I assumed an SB1, but there are no cutouts in the rear of the frame. I have even tried pushing through, thinking that they may just be covered up, the result of a sloppy cast...

Thanks,

Steve

BC and BC carbine have case hardened SB2 frames with the cutouts in the rear of the breech.

A case hardened SB1 pardner frame I sold had no cutouts.

I don't think any of them are actually case hardened.  It's case colored steel.  The only thing on a BC or Classic Carbine that is truly case hardened is the butt plate.  Take a look at the coloring and you'll see the difference.

I'm not a metallurgist but I don't think any case hardened steel would ever take the pressures that the SB2 frames can withstand.  I'm sure there are some members here that can confirm this.
If Tim (Quickdtoo) is around, I'm sure he can add some info here.

No, there are no case hardened SB2 frames, the Buffalo Classic frames are faux case colored, heat treated alloy steel, case hardening is a process done to cast iron, if you compare a real case hardened frame like the older H&Rs and Pardners, you'll see the difference.

It is coloring only, but you can get some pretty good color depending on the receiver.  Both mine have nice hues.  ;)

I have four SB2 BC/Target frames, one is nice, the others are mediochre, much like the 405 Win frame.

Thank you for the clarification.  I thought they 'also' case hardened the steel BC frames for looks.

I also have an older SB1 case hardened frame that has some cutout in the rear, though not to the extent of the modern SB2's.
