Leupold Magnetic Boresighter

I'm the proud owner   of this little plastic gem, that I believe cost me close to $50 when insanity took over, and I sprung for this pathetic little piece of highly polished plastic made by old world craftsmen.

Does anyone know what purpose it might actually serve?

Beats the heck out of me.  I just shoot at a big piece if paper, measure from the bullet hole to bull and count clicks.  I have heard of some insane people using them though, maybe they will help you.

Hmm, I hate to guess at the cause in your case but mine works just fine. I picked one up at the SHOT Show three or four years ago when they were first introduced and have used it on dozens of rifles. While no bore sighter will give you elevation (the Leupold included) it does get you within an inch of center. I know mine has saved me a ton of ammo. I see Bushnell has a very similar model..................

"I see Bushnell has a very similar model.................."

and I have it.  Without an arbor, how do you place it on the barrel in the SAME EXACT PLACE?  Impossible.  So, if you can't do that, I don't feel like I'm checking ANYTHING.  I consider it a great $35.00 magnet, but  useless for bore sighting.

You know, that's what I originally thought too but the darned thing works.

As long as you get it sitting straight up and down with the crosshairs it doesn't matter where it sits on the bore. I know it shouldn't work and I seem to remember mocking it originally too but after using it for several years, I'm a believer.

Obviously and undoubtedly a piece of junk!! Probably will pollute the envoirnment if not disposed of properly. Send it to me and I will not only see that it is disposed of in a gentle, caring and envoirnmentally friendly way I will reimburse you for the postage.

Hey Randy, I'm just sitting here with Omega editing some muzzleloader video and he says he'll take that piece of junk off your hands too.

Geeze, I've got four of them Randy, including two arbour-style and you are wasting your time with all of them trying to establish elevation and the Leupold is the best for side to side. Just out of curiosity, why did you buy the Leupold if you had a different one that was working so well?

My unique level of stupidity, combined with a peculiar interest to experience as many things that do not work as possible-- so I can avoid them in the future.

I'll never buy Schlitz again, either.

Okay, that one I agree with but give the Leupold bore sighter a chance. It's a great device to do a quick check in camp after a flight or day on a horse to see if your scope has moved. Write down where the crosshairs are on the bore sighter when sighted in and you can quickly check to see if anything has moved. I take mine on every fly-in trip. Certainly not a replacement for checking at the range but if you don't have that option, I trust it.

It saves a ton of shooting with a new scope too. I give it two thumbs up and I'm not even a Leupold fan

I believe I have. Anyway, its a great conversation piece and fun at parties. Not limited to firearm use, it is a delightful refrigerator magnet as well. Chicks dig it.

I bought a Pet Rock once as well, and used to raise Sea Monkeys. That should explain it.

400 series stainless steel is magnetic, making the Leupold equally as ineffective as it sticks to a non-piloted point of the muzzle.

Hi everyone;
     Seems you guys have gizmoitis.

THE CURE:
Take the breech plug out and sight down the bore at a distant object, center the object in the bore and turn the crosshairs to it

I do that with ALL bolt-action centerfire guns, have been for years.  Does an AMAZINGLY good job.  This IS the easy way with muzzleloaders as well.  If I don't do THAT, I shot one shot and bring the reticle to the hole.  Both work well with no fiddly bore sighting device.

If I have several muzzleloaders at the same time, it is an easier route than than. Big target at 25 yards. Fire a shot, spin the adjustments at 4X the 100 yard clicks. 1/2" high at 25 yards, on the paper at 100-- and go from there.
