Unemployment drops to 8.5
« on: January 07, 2012, 05:25:21 AM »
Though the article cites

Economists cautioned that some of the gains reflected temporary hiring for the holiday season. The government adjusts the figures to account for those seasonal factors, but doesn't always fully account for them.

http://www.businessweek.com/ap/financialnews/D9S3GD6O0.htm

I would argue , Most not Some of the  gains can be contributed to the hiring of tempoary seasonal December employment and do not translate into full time employment positions. At least in my area of NE , we have not seen an improved Jobs MKT as of yet.

I'd like to see it drop a lot more. I'm working now, though it's contract and not permanent... but glad for it. Actually, 2011 was pretty good, even if I had to move away for five months. Looking forward to 2012.

The government is responsible for producing the numbers. Don't be surprised to see huge wonderful improvements just before time to vote.

I was working on a National Wildlife Refuge when Clinton was the boss. All of a sudden we started getting these wierd directives about how we were supposed to start reevaluating the proportions of our Refuges that were open to hunting vs. the part closed. The proportions had been standard guidance for years, about 25% closed to 75% open as I recall, and they worked.

But, Clinton was trying to prove at the time that he wasn't an anti gun, hunting president. Even though it was a tiny portion of the voters his boys thought it was important enough that the politicians decided to tinker with old old proven policy just to get a few votes. The directives were dutifully passed down the line, but strange to say hardly any managers found any cases where adjustment was needed.

Other bureaucrats with less loyalty to their professional standards will be easy to convince to bend the truth.

I have noticed, why it's like 2008 all over again. Politicians wearing out the TV. Lots of folks worried about losing their jobs. GE moving more production over seas, Boeing closing production facilities. Yep, things are getting back to normal.  ::)  By golly, I'm even Hoping for Change

I don't believe we could have done all of this without Dear Leader. His vision of the future has been prophetic, to say the least. His grasp of the golf club, er, situation delivered us to this point in history.

I for one feel blessed.  Excuse me, I need to go wipe a tear, this reminiscing has me all tore up.

In reality the figures are in the 20% range.  They only count people that are on unemployment.  The people whose unemployment has ran out, and the folks that have given up looking for a job, are not being counted.  Then again so many people have work, but are underemployed.  I know a one time high doller archetect that is remodeling houses, and several engineers now working at blue coller jobs.  I know one guy who is a mechanical engineer, that is pulling ashes out of a power plant.  That is an entry level job usually done by kids right out of high school.  But as he said it pays the morgage.  A school teacher, working as a maintenance mechanic.  Lots of the people in the country are working but underemployeed.  Don't see it getting better any time soon.

When Obama speaks about cuts why is he always talking about cutting the military, Social Security, and Medicare?  how about ncutting the Dept of Energy, Dept of Labor, Dept of Agriculture, Dept of Transportation, Dept of Commerce, EPA, National Park Service, or some other agency?
Where is old Joe when we really need him?  Alaska Independence    Calling Illegal Immigrants "Undocumented Aliens" is like calling Drug Dealers "Unlicensed Pharmacists"
What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

How will the ignorant masses ever survive without the dept of ... to tell them what to do? I for one nearly drowned in the shower this morning. Fortunately the shower head had a warning not to stare into the water. I can now rely on another dept of nonsense to tell me that payday loans are really really expensive, :o  coulda knocked me over with a feather.

The great thing about the government is, if you don't like the rules, you just change them! ;D
They changed how they calculated unemployment a while back ... its the new math. So I usually
go here for my unemployment stats: http://www.shadowstats.com/alternate_data/unemployment-charts

We're over 20, pushing 25% when you consider the number of working age citizens in the US who aren't.

I find it insulting that the 20 million people who either have given up work, or are working just a little bit and not enough are not counted by this statistic. Everybody knows it, but we simply take the government's word that it's 8.5. It is totally wrong to use an obsolete measure like this, morally, ethically, and technically. It does nobody any good to bury our heads in the sand and pretend this problem doesn't exist.

One thing the govrnment ignores is the self employed, or the self unemployed, "as is my case" who are not working and can not file for unemployment benifits.  We are not counted in their numbers and belive me there are thousands just like me.

The numbers the American public hear are pure BS.

There are a lot of highly educated out-of-work people in our country right now, saddled with college and home loans that they will not be able to pay off. They will vote for the candidate that pays off their loans, which then puts their burden on the shrinking minority of us who pay taxes. They will vote for the candidate that gives them free HC, which also puts a burden on the taxpayer and the HC system itself. Unemployment is a ripe breeding ground for socialist ideals, if you look at history. Hungry people will abandon their beliefs and principles ... makes sense.

And Obama's defense plan is to cut the military workforce by 1/3, cut 500,000 jobs out, by 2022, the bulk of which will be in his 2nd term. That's active duty, which translates to at least that many if not more in civilian jobs, contract or GS. I suspect the public unions will be safe, but everyone else will be at risk. In November, DOD manpower office violated law and implemented an Early Release Board, laying off promotable E-6s. Law states that once you make E-6, you're guaranteed reenlistment to 20 years and retirement as long as you keep your nose clean. I was present for delivery of the news to 10 high quality men, 9 of which with families, who had worked hard and fully expected us to uphold our end of their contract. They'll get a lump sum severance of 10% of their base bay times the number of months times the number of years of service, before taxes, as well as 6 months health care, and 18mos COBRA afterwards. Many E-5 and below will be ramped out at the end of their current contract, although the plan is to keep recruiting. E-7 and above, to include officers, will be facing early retirement boards. I'm spitballing, but I figure that's 750,000 more unemployed ... say 600,000 families. Nevermind 2nd and 3rd order effect on local businesses, contractors, housing markets, schools, etc.

On another post not to long ago, I looked up the actual unemployment figures. It's around 16.5%. The govt. changed the way they count unemployed over 20 years ago, just to make it look better. They did the same with inflation. I think the web site is called true figures, and they give you the real figures the way it was done 20-30 years ago. gypsyman

If we go back to the way they used to figure the unemployment, the true figure is closer to 12% with over 20% underemployed.  The Obama administration has been slowly SHRINKING the totals used for the workforce and comparing it with the people who FILE claims.  The workforce hasn't shrunk.  Most boomers aren't retiring early like me and I wanted to, but my 401k shrunk and hasn't gone back up enough to retire.  So I am still working.  Someone said the boomers are retiring.  Well it isn't so, most say they will have to work past 65 just to make ends meet.  So, the population is increasing, 50% of those between 18-30 have or will go back home to live part of the time.  I'd say the numbers are cooked, and yes, replacement economy is going ok, but growth is nil.

I know several people who cannot retire because their savings are kaput, and health care insurance is sky high.
