45 colt range day
« on: January 10, 2012, 05:40:53 PM »
Had fun today working up some loads for the 45 colt. Seems to like 18grs of 2400 with a 255 RCBS RNFP. I wanted to play a little with it, so I tried shooting at our steel plates at 200 and 300 yards. Talk about a rainbow arc!. It was really neat watching the shiney bullet go up and come back down and hit the plate through the scope. Once I got the holdover right, I was hitting them every time.

It's a great little caliber and rifle, and used within it's limits it will take down anything up to deer sized game with ease.

Anything a little larger you can ream the chamber to .454 Casull and be the baddest thing in the woods.
My culled down Handi's are the 45-70, and then I have a few others to keep it company...357 Mag/Max. .45 LC/.454 Casull Carbine, .243 Ultra, and 20 gauge Tracker II.

Sweet.  Sounds like a good day.  I'm jealous.  Haven't had a chance to get out to shoot since deer season.  8(

It's been really nice here for the last two weeks. Today is supposed to be the last of it. Kinda weird to have upper 50's in January for Iowa. I still get a kick out of watching that silver bullet come up then down threw the scope. Then watch it hit the plates and hear the bong!

With in limits and with good hand loads, it will do allot bigger game than deer too!!!  ::) ;)

The 45 Colt is a excellent close to med range big game caliber! I prefer the big 300Gr jacketed or hard cast WFNGC bullets for hunting. The later if deep penetration is needed and the later if you need some expansion. Most manuels list vel form vented barrels less then 8" long. The ol' boy can really get things moving with modern powders!!! Near 2000fps with 250gs bullets and near 1700fps with the 300s puts this caliber very close to the med 45/70 loads!!!

As stated, ream to casull and 2000 fps from a 300 is pretty easily!! Yet still can shoot 45 Colts with good accuracy!! I freamed mine and I love it!!

I've always been amazed at just how efficient the 45 Colt is with good handloads from a rifle barrel.
