Lots of things happening here in Alaska
« on: January 09, 2012, 11:03:38 AM »
There is five different geographic areas of Alaska.  With so much area we have lots of different weather at the same time.

1.  Seward Peninsula:  The ships trying to make it to Nome are encountering shifting and thickening ice.  Ice is now over 2 feet thick.  The possiability of supplying Nome may not be possiable.  Conditions at Nome currently, blowing snow and temps at zero.

2.   South Central:  Cordova 18 feet of snow has fallen during the past few weeks.  Latest snowfall along with high winds has caused roofs to collapse, and has totally buried some houses trapping people inside.  The National Guard has been sent, but due to heavy snowfall they can not fly to the town.  There is no roads to Cordova.  They are having to wait for the State Ferry to get them to town.  The town of Valdez has also been suffering the same fate.  Been wondering about our old friend "Dave In The Bush", he lives in Valdez.  To top it off it rained last night down there, making it trecherious.  Everything is covered by a layer of ice.  Anchorage itself is buried in snow.

3.  Interior:  Here in North Pole, and Fairbanks temps unexpectdly dropped last night to 30 below.  Fresh snow fall of four inches, along with the sudden cold has made it hard to drive or get around.  Snow won't pack at these temps, it just keeps blowing around after vehicles pass, making visiability almost impossiable.  The Steese highway is closed near Eagle Summit, due to blowing and drifting snow.  DOT has to wait till the winds die down before they can begin to open the road.  I went to leave this morning and both snow machines won't start.  I'm stuck in the house today.  That's OK, at -30 I am not too enthused about going out calling.  Decided to go have lunch with the wife, Truck won't start, (Darn Diesel) really stuck at home now.

4.  Here in Fairbanks:  A woman that played Hockey with my son over the years, was arrested Friday for sexual abuse of a minor.  My son knew her well, thought she was HOT, but too old for him.  She went to coaching an all girls team.  Now she is in jail.  Game Board started a week long meeting in Anchorage today.  I have seven proposals before the board.  They will be having a second meeting here in March.  Looks like my proposal for "No closed season, No limits on Coyotes" is well supported by the public and advisory commitees.        As you can tell I'm bored.  Rog

Here in the NE, we have global warming. Really no snow, it was 64 in NY 2 days ago, lots of people wearing shorts, playing frisbee, then the Giants won yesterday. Ski resorts are dying. Snowmaking every chance they gets and it just melts 2 days later. Small businesses that stocked up on salt to melt snow are getting emergency loans because they have sold none of it. Maybe it is the Rapture coming?

Well the National Guard finally got there to help dig out.  Now they are having avalanches of snow coming down into parts of town.  The Guard barged in heavy equipment, they are loading the snow onto barges and dumping it out in the ocean.

As for the Ice Breaker and fuel tanker headed to Nome, they are having problems, new estimates are next week sometime, if at all.  Ice is shifting and pinching the sides of the ships.  Norton Sound is full of fresh water from the Yukon River, it's not salt water.  That is why it is frozen so thick.

YOUR FRIENDS' ACTIVITY    Short on Fuel, Alaskans Now Burning Their Stuff  The Atlantic WireBy Adam Martin | The Atlantic Wire – 2 hrs 28 mins ago           Most winters bring news of a particularly bad Alaskan deep freeze, but this year's is so harsh that residents running out of fuel are burning their stuff because it's too cold to even go outside and get wood. A Russian tanker trying to deliver diesel and gasoline to Nome got hung up on thick sea ice and won't get there until Thursday or Friday, and in villages nearby it's too cold and snowy for planes to land with heating oil. This stuff is endlessly fascinating to those of us living below the arctic circle, where the worst winter storms result in streets left unplowed for days. Days! "My husband and I are using our fish rack woods to heat up our home because it's so cold to go out and get wood," a woman named Hilda Booth, of the inuit village of Noatak (where the low's hovering around -45 degrees), told the Anchorage Daily News. Can you imagine if you had to burn your Ikea coffee table to keep warm? What would you even burn it in? The natural gas-powered "fireplace" you'd like to someday install in your apartment? There's a reason the Discovery channel folks wrap all those Alaska shows sometime around November.
Mr. Charles Glenn “Charlie” Nelson, age 73, of Payneville, KY passed away Thursday, October 14, 2021 at his residence. RIP Charlie, we'll will all miss you. GB

Yes Noatak, and Kobuk two rural villages in the area near Nome have ran completely out of fuel oil, and gasoline.  Temps are down in the 40 to 50 below range.  Another storm has hit the coastal area, and is moving northeast.  It is bringing winds and snow to Nome, and the surrounding area.  More snow for Anchorage, Valdez, Cordova.  It has caused a sudden rise in temps here in the Fairbanks area.  This morning when I got up at 6AM it was 33 below.  At 9 AM it has gone up to 10 below.  Expecting around 5 above later today.  Warmer for today and tomorrow, then back down to 50 below Thursday.

Once it gets above zero I will try and start my Diesel truck, and take it to a shop to have the engine heater replaced.  Had it plugged in all day yesterday, but it never warmed up.

Addition:  Now it's 11AM and the temp is 3 above.  That bad storm for the coast brings good weather to us here in the Interior.  Pitty those people down in Valdez and Cordova.

Heard tonight on the weather more snow headed for Cordova.  Also Valdez has had over 20 feet of snow since October.  But they are better equipped to handle it than Cordova is.  Too bad Dave In The Bush is no longer on here, he could tell us all about Valdez.

Rained all day yesterday in Cordova, a slow soaking rain, that was sucked up by the snow.  Making it all that much heavier.  10 more inches of snow expected tonight and tomorrow.  Avalanches are now the worry.  The town sits right at the base of mountains.
