(update) bullet jumping crimp
« on: December 29, 2011, 07:16:48 PM »
Ok so I finally had some time to go shooting today. I had a post about my 475 jumping crimp that was 3 yrs old so I figured I would start a new thread and share my results and maybe help someone else with the same problem. The fix was to get a new sizing die from Hornady. The new die sizes cases 1.5-2 thousands smaller than the original did.The bad news is I'm sorely out of practice. :-[ Need to work on that. :)

When loading for my 475s i actually use a 512 expander. thing is it doesnt actually expand at all. Its big enough that I can set it so that it just opens the case mouth without going in far enough to expand anything. I too have probably had more trouble with bullets jumping in the 475 then any other round due to the fact that it does recoil more then most and alot of the bullet designs out there like the lee and rcbs molds are lacking in crimp grove dept. Case tension is your friend with them.

Yes the 400gr Lee was the worst offender.I wont say there was no jumping because I did not bring my calipers but nothing moved enough to lock up the cylinder and the fifth round looked normal.

Another thing I did this time is adjust the crimper while measuring to see if the case was getting bulged and losing tension.

that lee bullet is a great shooting bullet if you can get around the problem of them jumping. even if there not jumping crimp enough to tie the gun up it will effect accuracy. Its to bad lee doesnt open there mind up to changing things. theyve got the attitude that they know more then anyone and there designs are perfect as is. All theyd have to do is make the crimp grove a bit deeper and that bullet would be one of the best 475 bullets made and the same could be said for the rcbs 400 swc.

You are right it does shoot pretty good. Not sure if it is because of the long nose or the weight is good for the 475. I was planning on not buying them again but if the jumping problem is fixed I may put more time into them trying to make them shoot.

I found a place that sells the 325 gr gas check bullet cheap so I want to find some loads that will shoot that one well.

never had much use for a bullet less then 380 grain in a 475. they just dont penetrate that well. there fine for deer sized game but my linebaughs are used for shooting bigger game sometimes and i never saw the sence in working up loads for it that wouldnt take care of about anything. Id much rather run a 400 at a 1000 fps for a light load then run a 325 at any speed.
