Shortening 243 Winchester from 22 inches to 20 inches?
« on: January 11, 2012, 05:38:57 PM »
Thinking about shortening the barrel of my Remington 7600 243 Winchester from 22 inches down to 20 inches .
Curios as to what kind of velocity loss I can expectusing the Barnes 80 Grain TTSX factory load I use? and also what kind of weight reduction ?Also accuracy would not be affested would it ?

I'd say minimal weight reduction, velocity loss you could live with. One of my favorite 243s has a 20" barrel, 'Classic Compact' Mod 70. I also like my 284 win with a 20" barrel. They are great to carry too. As long as it's done right it should shoot just fine.

If you want a lighter gun, you won't lose much weight. If that is your goal you should put your resources towards a new lighter gun. A 'Micro-Hunter' Browning A-Bolt is light & handy.

You might not experience much of any loss with that length barrel already-maybe...50-70 fps/inch. First off have a good read-"The rifle barrel" by Chuck Hawks   in it he states that the .243 is best at 24" because of the powder burn rates,"hand loaded" that can be dealt with though. If yer set on cutting the barrel-try a few different powders and loads first ,get a base line then have at it..... Personally I wouldn't cut it,two inches doesn't take off that much weight anyhow...

Barnes doesn't list anything other than the velocity for their factory ammo for the 243 with 80gr TTSX @ 3350fps.  Unless  you chronograph that ammo you don't even know if your getting that.   I won't cut the barrel till you  to chronograph the load.
