we hunt smaller bodied west texas white tails and a 22-250 will drop them when you do your part, ie aim for a quick kill area like the eye or ear hole or a spine shot. When one of us shot an Axis Deer, which is about the size of one of those Yankee white-tails in the neck, a spine shot, the animal blinked then trotted off. We scoured that pasture for days in hopes of findin this monster to no avail. After that we keep the 22-250's and 223's for does and close in shots and the 243's and up for over 100 yards.
Only deer I ever lost was a shoulder shot doe with a 223 remington at 60 yards.

Dale,

I apologize for saying this, and no personal offense is intended, but nobody is "forced" to hunt whitetail with a .22-250.   At best, it is an extremely marginal round  for whitetail, and is illegal in most states because of it.

I'm willing to bet that if you just ask around among a few of your friends, several of them will have good .30-06, .308, .30-30, or .243 in the closet that they will be more than glad to lend for your a few weeks.

The .22-250 is a varmint round.  Don't go out and wound a whitetail with it. There is no reason for it and you will feel sick about it forever.

I'll go against the grain a little. First, let me state that most of the time if I'm deer hunting I use my 7mm-08 or 270 (or 25-06, 7mag, 308 etc)     I do own a super accurate Ruger #1 in 22-250. I've personally taken several (15 or so) deer with it, and I've let a few friends use it to shoot quite a few deer as well. (one used it last week to take a doe at a lasered 220 yards-went about 30 yards) I use the 55gr Remington soft points most of the time. I've mostly used it for does, but have shot several bucks with it.With a broadside shoulder or lung shot, it kills just as quickly as my bigger guns.   Several deer have dropped, furthest ran about 40 yards. I will admit they didn't leave much of a blood trail if they ran, but I don't feel undergunned if I'm carrying it and decide to shoot a deer. None were lost.
We shoot about  80 deer a year on our lease. I hunt in south Texas. Does only dress 80-110 lbs, and bucks usually dress 145-190 depending on when killed.  Average distance is probably 150 yards.  We use anything from 22-250's and 220 swifts up to 300 mags and 7mm ultramags. Over the last 10 years I have personally seen a higher percentage of deer lost to guys using the 300mags than the 22-250.   I don't think the smaller caliber is better, just that most guys shoot them more accurately.
Some will say the 22 centerfires or 243 should be reserved for experts. I would argue that most people that don't shoot much would lose less game if they choose a cartridge that doesn't make them flinch (even if its a 22 centerfire).

It's legal in a state (Pennsylvania) with more licensed hunters than any other state in the country and in my opinion, that speaks volumes. I used 52 grain boat tail hollow points and have dropped deer with a heart/lung shot at 200 yards.

A varmint round? It shoots flat and with a high velocity but it's definitely not limited to varmints. I'm willing to bet all those who say not to use it, never did.
