A-5 oddball part?
« on: December 09, 2008, 06:16:33 PM »
Made an interesting discovery on a late 40's A-5 that I got used many years ago. The shotgun got wet and took her down for a deep cleaning. And darned if the plug holding the main action spring (at the distal end of the tang) wasn't wood. I initially figured it was a homemade repair job, but after drifting out the crosspin, it looks like someone actually went to a lot of trouble to turn one out with a lathe. After I got a replacement part from Numrich (they sent a plastic one, bummer) I got to thinking about stories of wooden parts on late WWII era guns. Obviously, this shotgun is beyond that vintage, but has anyone seen this on other A-5's?

My old 12 guage ( bought about 1952 ) the first time I took it completely apart, it had a wooden spring stopper. I found out that it was replaced in the parts book with a plastic one. ( that will not hold water) So there was no problem with my replacing it with the newer one, as at that time I was hunting in SW Arkansas with a lot of humidity and an ocassional fall in.
Just change it my friend!!!!   Bernie
