Savage Axis problems
« on: February 04, 2012, 05:02:46 PM »
I would like to talk to anyone that has had problems with the Axis not feeding shells from the mag. into the chamber.
I have a 223 an about 1/3 of the shells won't feed properly into the chamber.

I put around 20 rounds through mine yesterday (.223) and had one round not feed right.  Last shell in the magazine.  Are you resting the rifle on the magazine when you work the bolt?   Im not sure what the problem could be.  But mine seems to feed fine.

If you aren't using an oddball OAL length cartridge or a round nosed bullet I'd call Savage and make arrangements to send it back for repair.  The rifle is new enough that I suspect they'll fix it without charge and ship it back in working condition.

Are you working the bolt with authority ?Often a bolt action will not feed well working the bolt softly.

I just got an Axis Package deal three days ago. That magazine looks flimsy, well it is a bottom priced rifle. ;)
I stuck a couple of rounds into the magazine and used my fingers to slowly push a round forward to see how the magazine would release the round and discovered that on my reloads the case hung up when the neck opening contacted the inside of the front piece on the magazine which is sharp.  I took some very fine sandpaper and with medium pressure took the edge off. That appeared to fix the problem at least with the finger test.

Do you think you need to slam the bolt to load a cartridge with a Winnie  or a Wby as two examples. Betcha you don't. ;) Not even on a upgraded Savage.

Just got an Axis .223 this weeks, feeds 4 types of ammo I have tried flawlessly! Dang things feels like the bolt is on roller bearings and the trigger is just under #2 after a 10 minute modification. It will group 3 shots just touching with factory ammo, or slightly larger, and under 1/2 with  2 different handloads, both using match flat base bullets. I got this for bargain truck gun/lightweight callingand running and gunning rifle, ss, and put a dBurris 4x12 on it.
