CZ 452 Special military training rifle
« on: August 09, 2011, 12:57:33 PM »
Been wanting one of these and decided to buy one soon,  just want to plink with it, and use open sights, maybe find some type of peep sight like the Williams FP with target knobs or something.  Does anyone know if I need to have a taller front sight on it if I mount a Williams FP made for the 11mm dovetail cut in the receiver?   Also, anyone have one of these?  Could use some advice on sights but don't want to spend too much money, this is for fun plinking mostly.  Thanks
Jim

Jim, I don't have one but a friend has one and it is a nice 22lr, matter of fact I want one bad !!  Those sliding rear sights on it are real nice, even I was hitting the 6in.steel plates out to 150yds without too much of a problem with cheap federal ammo.  Don't make plans to get after-market sights until you try out that rear sliding sight, it really is pretty good, and it seemed well regulated out to 150yds, my buddy said it was a bit off at the 200yd mark with the ammo he was using but he really likes it for the accuracy, trigger, long barrel and the factory irons.  It was the most fun I've ever had with a 22lr and open sights.

Dave, thanks for the advice on trying out the factory sights first, I will do that.  I have read somewhere that people like those.  They might very well be all I need for plinking and having fun.  Got to thinking about it and decided I didn't like the idea of the Williams peep that attaches like a scope anyways and would likely have to spend more money than I wanted to do it properly.   Thanks for the reply.

I have one.  I think bringing mine out to the range has sold more CZ rifles.  The adjustable rear sight is calibrated out to 200 yards/ Meters.  We would put clay birds out to 200 yards all over the hill side of the range.  With the standard sights and off hand we would kill those disks all over the range.  At 200 the sight is one and any where else on the range you need only slide to the distance and shoot.  If you miss, it was you, you will be close but it was you.  The action is a real action.  Feels like my deer rifle.  I like the rifle and any time I am headed to the range, it goes with me.  The three 10/22's I own stay at home uless I need to shoot fast for an event like bowling pins.

I have 1 also in 17hmr .Extremely accurate with the iron sights and a real joy to shoot. What no one has mentioned is that along with the rear sight, the front sight is adjustable also,so that you can set your rifle up for about any brand of ammo you choose to shoot .But you better not wait, there is only a limited supply left, CZis changing over to the 455 model and the sights aren't nearly as good.
If you want a peep sight J&P Enterprizes makes replacement leafs for the rear sight that just drop in .They have three arpeture sizes to choose from. You can find out everything you would ever want to know about CZ's at Rimfire Central.com

Thanks for the replies everyone.  I picked it up today, very interesting 22 rifle.  I think I like that sliding rear sight, the sights are finer than I thought they would be.  All I had time for today was to take the action/barrel out of the stock and clean things up and get to know it a little bit.  It came with a factory 50 meter target, so at least it will be on paper when I shoot it.  Question....what size is that set screw in the front sight in case I need to change the elevation of the front sight?  Seems pretty small...?  Probably metric?  Is it a metric allen screw?  That's about the only thing I'm wondering about so far.  Can't wait to get out there and plink with it.

Oh by the way.  The CZ rifles will feed and shoot CB longs.  They are quietier than my spring air pellet rifle.
do not use the Colibri no gun powder bullets.  They get stuck right under the front sight.  Most of the super colibri will leave but not real accurate.

Well I spent the morning sighting it in, figured out the front sights needs a metric allen wrench.  I must say I'm impressed. I like the sliding rear sight for plinking just fine.  I set the rear on 50m, then adjusted the front sight to get the height, then I played with windage.  I was pleasantly surprised that the rear sight increments work,  I slid it to 25m, it was dead on there, slid it to 50m, dead on, same deal for 100m.  Everything worked great, had a good time.  Was kind of surprised that the trigger was as good as it was, that helped a lot. This rifle was probably the best buy for the money I've had in a long time.  I had more fun this morning than I've had in a long time.

Might want to try a J&P peep sight blade if you like the original rear sight...

They also sell hex socket screws to replace the crummy slotted ones 452s come with.

Victor3,  I think I might give those hex socket screws a try.

mcwoodduck, I do think your right, I took a friend shooting yesterday and we had many guns to shoot that day, but this one was the most used, and some of the others we never did get around to shooting.  All he could say was "you can't miss with this rifle"  it was so consistant it was almost boring.  We were hitting paper ammo boxes at 100 meters and our old eyes could barley see anything but a blur.  I couldn't get him to stop shooting it... ;D  He slid the sight up to 150m and was smacking the steel turkey every single time, looked at me and grinned and said we got to break this thing in.  He'll be getting one of these.  ;) I've been looking at the full stock models today.  I'm kind of interested in the fs model to have something shorter but with the same sights.

(Sorry to resurrect such an old thread.)

If you're still thinking about going the peep sight route, give Tech Sights a try:  http://www.tech-sights.com/cz452-3.htm
They might look a little "tacti-cool", but they're certainly more streamlined than the Williams Foolproof.  Then again, it is the military training rifle.  ;)  The Williams peeps are fantastic, but aesthetically quite blocky and awkward.

I'm still on the fence as to whether to buy a full-stock or a trainer.  My local gun shop has both, but I'm sure they won't last long.  I doubt I'll add an aperture sight either way, but it's nice to have options.

After shooting this a bunch the last few months I've decided to use the sights that came on it.  They work just fine and the sliding rear sight is fast and accurate.  Also, that European slope on the stock works out perfect for those low sights. Only thing I added was a sling from Jeff's outfitters.  I'm sure a good peep closer to the eye would improve groups while shooting paper targets, but I'm just plinking and shooting for fun and the rifle shoots better than I do as it is.  Actually the sights that came on it are better than any stock open sights I've seen on a .22, I think I'll just leave this rifle as is.

I bought one in 2001 and it has been the best .22 rimfire rifle I have ever owned.  I used a scope until 2 years ago, then went with the open sights.  They remind me of the Mauser sights that I grew up shooting, this rifle will hit the target at 200 yards consistently with the open sights.

I also had the version in .17 HMR, great shooter too.  Had to use a scope on that one, but it got several crows while hunting and was a good bench shooter.  I might get the new model down the road.

The 452 Military Training Rifle was the first gun I ever bought for myself.  It's also incredibly accurate.  You'll love it!
