I need some information.  What is the most accurate ( out to 600 meters) NONcustom rifle, caliber that is avalible for around $500.  Also What about optics, looking at the Weaver T36.  Straight 36 power or do I need to look at variable scopes?  All these are in regaurd to hitting an egg, yes a chicken Grade A egg at 300, and 500 yds. All the info is appreciated.  I now have a 22-250 that shoots .75" 4 shot groups at 300 yds, but don't think the 50 gr. bullet will hold up to 500 yds, so I came to y'all.

Finally!!! I'm glad you asked. Long range rifle is my favorite thing.
The answer is:drum roll please: A Winchester Heavy Barrel Varmint Gun in .223,loaded with 69gr.HPBT Match bullets or heavier with a 1-10 to a 1-7 twist barrel.
Or the same in .308 with 200gr. Match-kings.or even 168 Match-kings or 175gr.MK's Of course the twist is different on the barrel. About 1-14 if memory serves....
The model 70 Varmint is a great rifle out of the box. I have shot one of the new ones a great deal.
I'm afraid though, that what you want to do is outside the ability of any factory rifle unless you have incredible luck on the one you buy. Hitting a 2" oblong target at 600m(660yd.) consistently will require the finest rifle that can built. And a Distinguished Expert  to shoot it.
Sub-minute of angle rifles at 300yd. are not unusual. Past 300yd. is a entirely different ballgame.600meters is nearly 1/2 mile & being able to read the wind & mirage are critical. The angle of the sun can put you off by 6" or more, & so you have laid a rough task out for your self.
As for a scope;the Weaver 36 is good, but I would get the very best I could afford. And remember, the scope magnifies the mirage too.

Holler back,& we'll kick this around some more.

Have you tried the 75 gr. hornadys in the 22-250? that would be my first step, 2nd would be a cronagraph. the extreme spread between shots will cause more misses do to elevation variation than anything. If your serious the 6-BR is the tightest on shot to shot spread I've seen, don't know if you could get a barrel conversion for a savage. that would put in the price range. I've seen the T-36 work well at that range but don't know if mirage is a big problem where  you are. maybe a nice variable Burris would be better.

Sharp Shooter Supply lists the "6 BR Norma" (assuming this is the same thing and the "norma" is left off in most references)
made from a Douglas XX blank, fully chambered and threaded, in Stailess Steel.   looks like available twist rates are 1-in- 8,10,12,and 14.
Price is listed as $239

but i somehow think that THAT qualifies as a "custom" set-up

detritus,it might be "Custom" alright, but sounds like a pretty good deal. Getting it installed & head-spaced ought not be too bad on the ol' wallet.

if you or someone you know, that will let you rent/borrow it, has the proper headspcae gauge, and you have/can borrow a "savage barrel nut wrench" ($38.50 from SSS, brownells might have a cheaper one) you can headspace a savage in your garage.

here follows real basic overveiw instructions, NOT to be used to do the job get better one's first!

You install the barrel in the receiver but do NOT put the nut on yet, then slowly run the barrel in checking with every adjustment, till there is a noticable but not excessive amount of bolt drag,  then you thread on the barrel nut and tighten it down smartly.   doing so takes all the "lash"  threads of the barrel/receiver, and of course draws the barrel away from the bolt face that amount, and the rifle should now be properly headspaced.

no reaming, only tools needed are the gauge and the wrench.

i think Brownells sells a "caliber change" kit for the savage that consists of a barrel, a wrench, and a set of instructions (i think they expect you to rent/borrow a headspcae guage from your gunsmith)

I know of a couple of guys who've considered getting a couple of wrenches, a barrel in each caliber they like to hunt with (all with the same profile), and the headspace guages for said calibers, plus any aditonal bits they'd need for a switch over, then casing them up in sets,  guage, barrel, and anything else needed for the change to THAT caliber, and a pre-zeroed scope all in the same padded storage case.  and using then using these "kits" to turn a factory Savage rifle with repeatable QD scope mounts, into a switch barrel/cailber rifle.  have not seen this done yet but it would be interesting to see.

OK what "if" I found a Rem 700 action, for X dollors( dont know what a good buy would be to just use action or can you just buy that) what would be the most accurate caliber to have a barrel installed. What twist, Stock you know all the normal stuff you long range veterans know to do to get them little groups. :?  And to answer the 75 gr? I dont know if they would stabilize in my factory twist rate.

Winchester makes a Model 70 Varmint-target rifle for $700 retail.  It is about $500 wholesale.  It is pillar bedded and has a stainless barrel.  I had one in .223 and it has a 1 in 8" barrel.  Shot some pretty fancy scores at 600 yards using Sierra 75 gr bullets.  The stock is the old macMillian style and is Kevlar .

Hey guys-
I was wondering where I can get ahold of this Sharpshooter Supply place you speak of. I have a line on a nice Savage for next to nothing, and would like to try one of the new short mags or a 6 BR in it, if I could find barrels for it. I know someone with the wrench and gauges I would need, so all I need is the parts. Thanks to all for the help.

Go Here  and scroll to the bottom and e-mail them request a print catalog.

week or two later you'll receive a neat little catalog that was probably produced at their local Kinko's  (ie made from 8.5x11 printer paper, with the pics and text being obviously but neatly produced by a highend color inkjet or similar)

the barrels should be at the back of the booklet (least they were in mine and i don't think they'd change it around much. do you?   )

williamlayton, mirage is the waves of heat you see moving across the range on a warm or hot day. Reading the mirage will help you to know the wind speed. This is crucial to accurate shooting at long range.
Lone Yankee who posts on here too, has written a M-1 Garand book that decribes how to read the mirage very well.
If you e-mail him,he might send yuh an excerp that will tell you how it's done.

i always wanted to build a savage 6mm imp with a slow twist barrel to shoot long bullets ( high b.c.) or a fast twist .224.
