spring steel wire for trigger job (pre accu)
« on: January 14, 2012, 11:25:54 AM »
I have a pre-accutrigger Savage 10ML II.  Trigger pull is near 8 lbs.  When I try to turn the screw to reduce the spring pressure to about 4 lbs, there is very little tension on spring.  I know that it is important to have some tension in this spring.  I read online that it is best to replace the factory spring with 0.040" spring steel wire.  Anybody done this?  Any comments?  Anybody have any spring steel wire left over from this project?  Thanks in advance, Chris

Possibly.  I won't have the chance to look tonight.  It might take a couple of reminders.  Age sucks.

I went to the local tru value hardware and found a spring with a long hook end ,cut off the long end and was in business. Cost was less than a buck.

Good.  I finally got the chance to look.  I did find a small chunk in the recesses.

Assume you have a straight steel spring, like ones on Stevens 200s.  Have replaced one with a weaker spring from local Ace hardware store.  Have also just thinned out the factory spring to reduce trigger pull.

Brownells sells some kits with straight spring wire.  The only tricky part will be putting the proper bends in the spring...especially the 90 degree bend.  The trigger spring in my pre-accutrigger Savage has a 90 degree bend in it where it fits into the adjustment screw.

However, much to my surprise, when I completely removed the trigger spring from my rifle, the pull was still about 8 lbs.  Apparently the previous owner had been over zealous in setting the over travel set screw too close.  I was essentially pulling against the set screw.  Doh!

After doing to light polishing at the sear and setting the trigger up correctly, it breaks cleanly at about 4 lbs.  Perfect for a hunting rifle.
