Cabela's, Leupold, Encore! Puzzled New Guy..
« on: January 18, 2004, 05:01:06 AM »
Hi, everyone, I am a newbie here and thought I'd share my most recent Encore experience with the crowd. Last fall, anticipating a new T/C purchase in .223, I ordered a new Leupold Varilux II 3-9X40. I figured that the combination, based upon previous experience with Leupold would match up nicely and do the job just fine.
I finally received the .223 set-up last week and when trying to zero the system, I found the two adjustments reversed- the 'L/R' was on the top (it did move the crosshairs up& down, though), and the 'Up/Down' screw was on the side and it did move the crosshairs L & R though.
I have never before seen such a reversal and my shooting buddy says he thinks I got a 'refurbished' scope.
What would you folks think of that reversal business? Color me puzzled.  :?

The only time I've seen that was when someone had mounted the scope 90 degrees off.

I don't think that's the case..

The 'UP/Down' is on the left and when turned, the crosshairs move left/right.
The L/R is on the top and when turned causes the crosshairs to go up and down.

If I rotated the scope to get the 'Up/Down' on top as is normal, I think, the "L/R" knob would be wedged between the scope and the mount and inaccessable.

Thanks for the reply.

You didn't say in your post, whether the UP/DOWN (marked) adjustment was on the left or right!
If it's 90 degrees off, it should be on the left as you are holding the rifle to your shoulder!  Otherwise, if it's on the right, the two adjustment indexes just got switched at the factory!

I have mounted scopes 90 degrees off, because the ejected brass would hit on the L/R adjustment cap and fall back into the action when the scope is mounted really low!

 OMG!

Lesson learned. I had been accepting my friend's description of the scope set-up verbatim and from a distance-- he was supposed to mount and bore sight the thing.
Well, I got the rifle in this morning and just as Chuck White had surmised, the scope had been mounted (90)deg to the left... Seems like he had just mounted some other scope and for one reason or another, it had the orientation described earlier- left side was L/R., Top was Up/Down.
I get my rifle in my hands and immediately could see the thing was 90 deg from 'normal'.
Interesting and a little upsetting at the same time. The guy and I have been shooting buds for years and I have never seen him do anything like this before...
Speechless and embarrassed.
Thanks, Chuck, I am sorry I troubled you with this one.

Ok, now the rascal claims it was all a joke! That son-of-a-gun says he knew of my tendencies to go to the web for comments and solutions and he thought he'd set me up. I was had big time! Man was I gullible!

(His next aerobatic flight will be a pisser, let me tell you! We'll test his sense of humor, for sure.)

Skyhook;
Glad I could help someone out!

Jokes can go a long way, at least he didn't mount the scope backwards!

Well, he brought the thing over and we sighted it in and the scope and rifle combo is simply excellent.
'Course, while I was trying some 300yd shots, he could be heard snikering a bit behind me.
His day is coming.
