Exciting to run accross a critter like that in the woods, I have just once. I live on the edge of charlottes city limits, in the county but just barely. Theres about 2500 forested acres around me as the result of a large chemical co. having aquired it long ago. I've a 3/4 mile 4 wheeler trail on our land out back and I hunt its circumference. On a rare snow day about 10 years ago I stalked this trail looking for deer and as I finished the 3/4 mile loop, saw a very large, black dog thing lying on its belly 50 yards down the trail in front of me. It was in thick brush but stood out like a sore thumb against the snow. I stopped breathing and sighted down on it in the same instant and for just a moment held the crosshairs on the head of a yellow eyed wolf. It began backing up immediately and through the 12ga. scope I watched a tall skinny full grown wolf/dog run flat out across the vally and down the other side of my trail. It DID look back several times and when it ran past my deer camera, jumped about 2 feet in the air when the flash went. I couldn't have been luckier to have 35mm photos to prove this story to friends and family. I'd have to dig them up and take a picture of a picture but if pressed I can prove it. The animal was bigger than my 90lb german shepherd, much taller, shaggy longish fur and looked underweight. Long knobby kneed legs and bright yellowish eyes. If it was crossed with dog or coyote i'd be surprised. My theory is that it was a pet wolf that got to be a problem and they dumped it. In any event it gave me one heck of a thrill and I feel like I got to share a primal shock not many have gotten to experience. Glad that critter came to see me:-) jeff
