Hog rub ?
« on: January 16, 2012, 10:26:37 AM »
Was hunting the other day and came upon a tree about 6" in dia. that had a rub on it with deep gouges on it about knee high, and started to get excited about a nice deer in the area but then noticed that where the rub was it was soaking wet as in very recently being wet and looked around at the trees around it and it was the only one that was wet the rest were all dry, and was wondering if large boars hook and scape there tusks on trunks to mark there territory. I've seen plenty of trees that they rub on but this was a first.

Don't think so. Hogs do rub on trees and the way you know it was a hog is by the mud rubbed off on the tree bark. I've never seen one damaged in the way you mention by a hog. Won't say it ain't never happened but I sure haven't ever seen or heard of it.

Thanks Graybeard, I'v seen the mud rub's on trees but I wonder if a nice size hog may have been in the water and rubed on the same tree as a deer had rubed, eather way I'm going to set up about 50 yrd's. away from it tommorrow afternoon.

I have found trees with cuts in the bark, but in conjunction with the mud GB described.  Not sure boars intentionally hook the tree with their cutters, or if it is incidental to rubbing their bodies against the tree.   I will take a look tomorrow and see if I can find some to take pics of.

i have seen many trees that have been freshly rubbed with tusk marks in them. its seems to be in an area that ive seen several boars. i could get pics of 1/2 dozen trees within 100 yards of a wallo
