Best way to get rid of the super gloss finish on my BDL??
« on: October 12, 2011, 05:38:19 PM »
I have a 700 BDL with the high gloss finish.  I'd like it to have more of a satin finish more like my 700 Classic and 7600 Carbine.  I heard rubbing it with fine steel wool would knock the gloss finish down.  Anyone heard of this??

Thanks, NYH1!

im forunate to have a buddy who is a stock maker. He takes bdls and strips the finish removes the white line spacers and oil finishes them and cleans up the checkering and beds the gun. It looks like a totaly differnt gun when hes done and the advantage to stripping the stock and refinishing it is the factory finish tends to hide alot of the grain in the wood. Ive got another bdl stock sitting in the loading room waiting for me to come up with some money to find a sps in 7 ultramag. For about the same 150 bucks he charges me I could pick up a cdl stock. Ive done 3 like that now. They to me look even better but the bdl does look nice and is a change of pace.

Blasting it with fine glass beads (look like powdered sugar) at low pressure works well to knock the shine off and doesn't damage the finish. It'll come out looking more like a CDL.

I had a hairline crack on a Browning rifle repaired by a furniture maker.  He apologized that the shine was gone where he repaired the crack.  I said that I wish the entire rifle looked like that.  Here is the advice he gave me and it worked.
Use 0000 steel wool and Olde English Stratch Remover.  Soak the steel wool in the scratch remover and work it gently over the glossy finish.  Repeat the process until the desired results are achieved.  Olde English comes in several tints.

I think if you'll ask Brownells they will tell you to use rotten stone to dull your stock?

Get yourself a can of spray satin finish, hold it about 18 inches from the stock.
Give it a few light coats, and the shine will be gone.
I carry a single shot.
'cause it only takes one shot.

Birchwood Casey® Stock Sheen & Conditioner will do the trick.

I'm a big fan of carnuba wax. being from the N.E., I like the original Butchers Bowling Alley Wax, without silicones, .Lightly knock the finish down with a synthetic wool like 00 or 000 scotch brite - dry. Wipe down with a rag and mineral spirits, coat with as many as desired, coats of Wax. Very simple.

Use 0000 steel wool. I use it all the time on my stock refinishes.

I completely stripped my BDL with oven cleaner and plastic knives. I was a lon process, bt worked. I then sanded and steamed the dents. Sealer came next, more rubbing, sanding, then multiple coats of lin-speed, more cutting of whiskers, etc. Leave the checkering alone. Mine came out beautiful, and I get a lot of compliments. The hard gloss finsih does hide the natural grain. the oil brought it out beautifully. It is easy to touch up as well. Great winter project. Oh, I glass-bedded the action while I was at it. Now it looks and shoots better than before. Careful of the forend tip, it's painted, and finish remover will alter it

Very very very lightly rub with 0000 steel wool with the grain.  Then take a pair of old denim jeans or very light canvas -- you can get this by going to Lowes or Home Depot and find a ground cloth in the paint department. Wash it so it is soft and cut a 6x6 inch patch from it or the old jeans. Soak the denim/canvas patch in mineral spirits and rub with medium-hard pressure over the stock with the grain.  Let the stock dry and take a piece of soft cotton flannel and buff it hard and long with the grain.  Finish with a light coat of paste car wax. This has worked for me with materials readily available.
