Lee Powder Measure Choice
« on: January 27, 2012, 03:15:43 AM »
I have a Lee Classic Turret press and do not have a powder measure to use on it. Would I be better off with the Auto Disc Pro or the Perfect Powder measure.? I believe both can be used to automate powder charging with the appropriate accessory die but am a bit foggy on the details.

IME/O, the Perfect is better for rifle cartridges because it'll dispense enough powder in one drop to fill them.  I use a Perfect for my rifle reloading.  The Auto Disk (I have and like the ProAuto Disk) is oriented toward pistol cartridges.  The Perfect could be used to charge pistol cases, so long as you don't have too small a cartridge, and/or don't want too small a charge.  Using the double-disk version/system on the ProAuto Disk measure, you can satisfactorily charge 223 Rem-sized rifle cases.  I'm not certain how much larger you could go, as that's the largest rifle case I've ever personally charged with my Auto Disk measure.

Another option is the Lee dippers.  Lots of folks seem to have a poor opinion of them, but they're extremely consistent when used as directed (read Lee's instructions, but basically you strike them off level with a business card).

MZ5,
Thanks. That is exactly the kind of answer I was looking for. As for pistol cartriges, mostly 45auto. 223 is a primary concern on the rifle side.
Now playing devil's advocate just to continue the discussion; Would the Perfect not wind up being less expensive after buying a double disc kit and the autodisc pro? The  Perfect would also be infinitly adjustable.
The autoDisc Pro is a proven quantity, though.

I am not a fan of most of the LEE line. (Never a powder measure or scale!!) I agree with MZ5 about the powder dippers! They do work just fine and are handy for some situations. Wash them occasionally in warm soapy water to keep static electricity at bay.  It's annoying when a portion of the powder charge stays in the dipper....

One easy to use manual charger  I like is the RCBS Lil dandy. Anthony the rotors drive the cost up I find it accurate and rely able. It's ability to be mounted to a progressive is handy while powder despensing remains manually dropped.

The Perfect could indeed end up less expensive, though still much more expensive than the dippers. :)
I would buy the Disk if I was going to do much pistil work, or if I wanted to use ANY flake-type powders.

You know, it takes quite a bit for cwlongshot to endorse anything from Lee. You might want to give the dippers a hard look. ;)

I have been using the dippers since beginning reloading and still use them. I use a dipper sized to get me close and use a very small dipper to adjust the weight on the scale(I use a Lyman). I find it a nice balance of speed and precision. I have a Lee Perfect powder measure which I have modified  for manual use per the Lee handbook. I like it very much but when set up time is included, the dipper/scale combo is faster unless I am doing a large run. I am starting to load for semi-auto handguns and rifles which go through ammo much faster so large runs are becoming more common for me. Hence the question on powder measures.
