I'm a tug boat pilot on the Ohio River and every bridge has a drawing with prints  for the exact heights. The dude didn't look at his chart books.
I've personally made that bridge several times and the only problems I've had is when the wind is blowing like a son of a gun. Can get pretty hairy. Never hit it tho. KNOCK WOOD.

52 BAGMAN. Wouldn't that ship have had lights forward for travelling at night?? I've seen tugs on the Ohio shine lights forward at night. It would seems that knowing a bridge was ahead that they would have been shining and doing some serious looking. Beautiful country dwn there. POWDERMAN.  :o :o

Yes they would have had adjustable spot lights, powerful at that. Looks to me that they were cutting it close with overhead clearance and didn't stop, till too late.

It's ok. I understand that Carnival has an opening for a Captain as soon as they refloat and rename the ship in Italy.  ::)

Never realized boats that size went up the Tennessee River.  I've seen barges up the Tennessee and the Cumberland, but never a boat that big.

I looked at the map.  this boat was in Kentucky Lake, above the dam.  Like Williamlayton said, maybe the water was high, lake was up, and Captain did not catch that.  Anyway there is some infrastructure jobs, the bridge will need to be rebuilt.  Since it is already closed, they may just tear it down and rebuild a more modern bridge, with better clearance.

I've checked all the pics that I can find and don't see any buoys so possibility that he did try to go through the wrong span. The last time I made that bridge there were buoys on both sides of the bridge. You do come out of bends on both sides on the approach and the up bound is pretty abrupt.

Lights were scheduled to be repaired today. This is a terrible blow for that entire area. It will definitely impact tourists next summer. POWDERMAN.  :( :(

Looking at the map of the area, it's going to be more than just a little inconvenient for the folks that used that bridge daily.
