My New Office
« on: January 25, 2012, 07:57:24 AM »
I'm presently sitting in my office with double ear pro on ... my office is directly under the flight deck of the USS George H W Bush. We're trapping and launching today, and the termination point of the cable brings the afterburners right over my head. I'm watching on the CCTV ... way cool.

For perspective, I'm a lifelong groundpounder, this is my first ship, first underway ... I've been at sea less than 48 hours. This is just way cool! Don't have my sealegs yet, and everything on this ship is built for people 4" shorter than me, including the bed. I'm already missing my wife's cooking. But I'm at sea, and there are fighters taking off overhead ... way cool.  8)

heh heh ... i had a 14 year First Class come see me in this afternoon, getting laid off by this new ERB fiasco (I think its criminal). He just needed someone to vent with, pray with. The whole conversation was in 90 second bursts, in between take offs and landings, but it made sense. This is a new one for me  :D

I got lost ... I do that, go exploring to see where I wind up so I can figure out how to get back. Dang this is a big ship. Found the carpentry shop, bunch of bored woodchucks in there just dying to show me the shop, and the precious wood collection. Then I found the aft fantail over the rear screws ... wish I had a fishing pole!

You don't need sea legs, TN, you're on a freakin' carrier.
Jesus said we should treat other as we'd want to be treated... and he didn't qualify that by their party affiliation, race, or even if they're of diff religion.

Here's some things the small boy surface types will love ...  ;D

I almost fell today, trying to run on one of the treadmills in the aerobics room, kept stalling out with the movement of the ship.
We set up a full size basketball court in the hangar bay. Still have room for plenty of aircraft. I think there's a volleyball tourney tonight.

Shall I keep going?  ;D

So I'm eating in Ward Room #3 (someone will get that.) The omelet chef was off duty today, but they had my favorite cereal at the cereal bar. Cloth napkins, gold rimmed china, crystal glasses, ornamental silverware. Last night the CS's wore tuxedo shirts with bow ties. I hear they do that every night in the Admiral's dining room, and the Captain's dining room.

But the Captain put a stop to Salsa dancing. We are a war ship after all.

I poke fun ... this is the hardest working crew I've ever seen, around the clock, and their morale is the highest of any unit I've served outside the Marine Corps. Honored to be here.

I'm envious. Thanks to you, and all that are on the ship. Fighter jets, carrier, thats awesome. One of my all time wishes would be to go for a ride in a fighter jet. A chance to watch them take off a ship deck would be right up there on the list also.

Bolter is where they miss the cable, right? and wind up dragging the hook across the deck? Yeah, lots of them right over my head. We're training "nuggets" right now - qual'd pilots, but not seasoned. Soon we'll be training guppies, and i guess that's like the keystone cops.

We did have one "whisper jet" where the pilot boltered, but didn't throttle up right away - CO was livid. The risk is that the aircraft won't have enough oomph to gain altitude and wind up dropping in the drink in front of the ship. I think policy is two strikes your grounded.

  Hello TeamNelson:
I remember the sounds of those jet engines. I was never on ship but pulled wrenches on a lot of jets and a few piston pounders as well, USN,1965-1969, doesn't seem like that long ago.
I pray for your safety and for you in your Calling.
  May God richly bless you,
thank you for your commitment To God and Country,
  HM

Lt. Commander Chaps,

Sir! Congrats on the promotion and your new assignment. Like others have said, thanks for being there for these young servicemen and women.   Your calling is very special to a lot of us that remember our days as youngsters far away from familar surroundings.  I would like to ask that all the members here on GBO commit to helping you with anything that you have difficulty getting through normal supply channels.  Bibles, books, study guides, etc.  I know you have to be denominational "neutral" but please allow us to help in any way we can.
I pray for the Lord to continue to bless you and your family.
