Working on an AC-130H Gunship
« on: January 30, 2012, 11:36:52 AM »
That's me (Ssgt) in the white cap with my back to the camera. This is from the cover of the Air Commando (Hurlburt Fld Newspaper)in 1980. We are working on an AC-130H Gunship. Note the ports for the 20mm Gatling Guns. That's an MC-130E Combat Talon in the background. They were used for Fulton Recovery rescues like the one seen in Green Berets with John Wayne and one of the James Bond movies with Sean Connery. I worked on them too. We are changing a Temp Datum Control Valve.

Great ole airplane, I spent about 10 years working the C-123 and C-130s,  then moved on to fighters and bombers.

I was on the F-111 program, (test and evaluation), then the B-1 and spent a short period working with the B-2.  My job was with the purchasing and testing of ground support equipment, I designed many of the tools currently used to maintain the B-1.

Cool picture!  Thanks for your service guys!  I went to an airshow at McConnell AFB one year and got to see some of those planes up close and personal.  Very impressive.

A 40mm cannon and a 105mm cannon.

While I never was aboard the gunships I have a healthy respect for the C-130.  I was aboard one that got shot up pretty bad coming out of Beirut.  We crossed the Med to Turkey with only one inboard engine running.

What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

I recently discovered that several of the planes that became Combat Talons once belonged to the CIA or "another agency" and were flown over Laos.
