What would you guys do?
« on: January 27, 2012, 12:13:46 PM »
Just got my brand new XCR II in and I didn't notice until I got home that there is a tiny flaw near the end of the barrel in the black teflon coating (you can see the stainless steel shining) It's very very small but it does still bother me a little since I just dropped $800 on the gun. Part of me says it's a hunting rifle and not to worry and I really would hate to deal with sending back to Remington... just don't know what to do???? I love the gun by the way! :)

Get over it. If that's the only thing wrong with it learn to live with it. If you are even remotely like me you'll put much worse blemishes on it the first time you take it hunting.

The only thing I am concerned with on a hunting rifle is accuracy and the repeatability of that accuracy plus that it functions properly. I know me well enough to know I'm gonna bump and scratch it soon enough so can't see worrying about such a comestic matter.

If it's teflon coated and scratches are going to bother you, you might as well get some coating from Brownell's or some place else to touch up the scratches it will eventually get anyway. Same as touch up cold blueing for carbon steel to keep it from getting rust pits. It might have just had a speck of dust on the barrel when they coated it.

Something else to consider is that if there is a badly prepped spot on the barrel that caused the coating to get a bare spot on it, it might continue to come off in that spot and get bigger. Maybe pick at it with your fingernail and if the clear spot gets bigger, send it back. It might have had a little oil spot there that didn't get cleaned off and prepped right. In that case, it could eventually start to "peel" back to the clean metal. You should be able to send it back at any time down the line if it should start to peel.....I think.
Sorry if I gave you more to fret about. Just some thoughts on the matter..................

Yea you guys are right... Kinda funny,,, I did put a tiny Sharpee dot on the place and I scratched the crap out of it to make sure it would not get any bigger. I can honestly say I know it wont get any bigger, that coating is tuff! Think I'll just go with Graybeard and live with it... these guns are susposed to be tack drivers!!

Also wanted to let ya'll know the X-Mark trigger on my gun is sweet... zero creep, crisp, and came out of the box set at three pounds. Maybe Remington has improved these as of late.

All my rifles are hunting rifles.  Some are pretty beat up after 30 years.
